Oh no... 1996 L67 LIM gasket failure
 

I have been unable to drive for the past 2 weeks due to surgery I just had. My bonneville has been sitting almost the entire time. My brother drove it once, for about 4-5 miles total. I went out today to start it up, and take it around the block. I noticed the coolant was (slightly) low, and there was (frozen) condensation on the inside of the oil fill cap. Being that the car has almost 160k miles on it, and it leaks oil from the sides of the LIM, I figured this was going to happen sooner or later.

The oil pressure seems to be in the normal range, although it was varying slightly every 2-3 secconds.

FelPro LIM Gasket: MS95977 ( $45.48 ) --Should i get the GM gasket instead?
FelPro S/C Gasket: MS95744 ( $9.24 )
FelPro T/B Gasket: 61024 ( $4.18 )
Help! Coolant Elbow 47065 ( $3.99 )
Inj. O-Rings (3X) ES-70599 ( $2.68 )

$65.57 total, not too bad at all :-D
And when I get in there, if the thermostat looks older, it will be replaced as well.

you are going to want the GM Metal Frame LIM gaskets

Change out that LIM gasket number from FelPro to the new GM Aluminum framed ones. We've learned about better gaskets since I did my swap over a year and a half ago. Actually..I'm getting ready to change out to the aluminum ones and they are on their way to me right now. ;)

A couple more questions-
Will the aluminum framed ones actually work on the 96 L67? The parts counter and GM parts books (i know both have been wrong before) say that my engine lacks the required locating pins for them?

How much more expensive than the fel-pro are they?

What kinds of sealants work the best on the corners of the LIM?

Certain years had the locating pins and others didn't. Bring in your registration so they can check your vin and also check the date your car was made on the door.

Now..before you head to GM again. Search on the aluminum gaskets. Read up... the locating pins are easy to cut off if you can't use them.
Also..reread my thread on doing the gaskets, the goop to use is permatex Ultra copper RTV.

also when you do this swap, make sure that you get the Dexcool out of the car....replace with the Prestone Dex Compatable coolant

It's just the end seals locator pins that are different, right?

As far as removing the dex, I already have about 3 bottles of 'mixes with any' coolant in my trunk for the swap, that's OK to use, right?

Yep, that coolant is fine. That's what I and many others use.
