Odd squeal coming from my car

I just noticed an odd squeal today, i had assumed it was my brakes but when i listened closely it wasnt, it stops when i accelerate, and squeal about 80% of the time while coasting and stopped idling, the volume of the coasting varies in that while accelerate it stops and then when i let go of the gass will either not squeal, squeal a little or squeal alot, and it semms to squeal more i hit a bump, any idea what it is?

How old are your brake pads? Is the squealer tab rubbing on the rotor?

:D Hello NERV, I just re-read you post, and noticed your statement "and idling."

The problem is, you have a vacuum leak somewhere. If you haven't found it already, you will want to spend some time checking around under the hood with the engine idling. Sometimes a piece of small hose (maybe a 3 foot long piece of vacuum or fuel hose) will aid in finding it. (used as a sort of stethoscope/listening device)

Just be careful messing around under the hood with the engine running :!:
Those serpentine belts can be VERY DESTRUCTIVE  to fingers, hands, etc.
:!: BE CAREFUL.

Sorry about that Nerv. I had trouble reading your first post. Either the vacuum leak or a belt.

yes deefinitely be careful with the whole pully end of the engine!

I was poking around my uncle's regal (3800 series 1) and i STUPIDLY put my hand down "wherever" and "Wherever" happeend to be the alternator pulley's fan!
I thank GOD that somehow it just sorta bit my hand and spit it out because i know for CERTAIN that a hand or fingers easily get stuck in that alt. pulley and I don't th ink i have to tell you that an engine is MORE MORE MORE MORE MORE than capable of destroying measily, weak bone!

With that out of the way, I bet it is a vacuum leak. I used to hear an electronic "wine' come out of my engine somewhere which was audible while i was in the car driving! I don't know what it was but (for the record my uncle's buick regal had it too). I think with time it has gone away (but i have replaced most vacuum lines since then so it might have been that!) but let me just say that my brother's ahem.. mitsu eclipse  ... makes it too and he knows for sure its coming from his fuel pump, so i just wanted to give you that idea to listen for. (maybe its coming from towards the back).

i cant seem to be able to egt under the hood to test it, ive driven aorund my neighboorhood a few times to get the squeal to start and when it does i park and open the hood but by the time i get it open it has stopped, any suggestions or should i just bring it to a mechanic and let them figure it out?

russianpolarbear 09-01-2004 08:50 PM

Could be a pulley?? Maybe the Harmonic Balancer..? Pow Ster Pump.. Alt... A/C?

Damemorder 09-01-2004 09:08 PM

Is the hood rattling?

Sidenote: Gearheads, maybe TC has problems under light load?
