Default A/C not that cold

The a/c doesnt seem to be working as good as normal. The compressor isnt making funny noises or anything, the air just isnt that cold, and it takes it longer than it should to cool the car even considering the hot weather. Does anybody think it could need R-12? If it does, I have plenty of it. I have a whole box of R-12 cans . What do yall think?

Being a 93, and prolly never charged before since it was built...ya i'd dump some in. Be carefull with that stuff though...pretty touchy equipment there. Make sure you got the right stuff before you try and charge it.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought they stopped using R-12 in 91? I thought 92 and up used R-134A?

I think Bonne'* were 94 and up. I think there'* a few 93'* here with 12.

My 93 with a build date of June '93 had R-12 from the factory.

Reading a sticker under the hood, apparantly it was dye-leak tested in aug of 02, and the next day it was 134a retrofitted. Thankfully this was a year before it fell into my hands.

Don't eff around with R-12 though. If you have some, take it to someone who can do it right.

Like Nate was eluding to, ensure you have the proper refridgerant and a proper set of gauges to ensure you do not under or over fill the system. Either way over or under does not make the sytem work any better.

The EPA mandated R12 no longer be used in 1995 model cars and newer. Up until then, R12 was the standard, however, many manufacturers went to 134A before 95.


Lowrider...R12 is no more or less dangerous than R134A. Either way, you need to have the proper equipment to charge your car safely.

to convert my 93 to r134 what all would i need to swap from my 95 parts car? from what i understand to retro fit r134 the fittings just need changed. where under the hood does it say what refer was used?

The type of refrigerant you have in your system is on a sticker on top of the condensor. That sticker also says the capacity of the system.

As for conversion, I'm not sure what is involved. In all the cars I've owned the systems came with R134A or were already converted...or I left R12 (I have a 30 lb. jug for the 79 T/A).
