bad coil pack. would be my first suspicion. go to JY, replace all three packs with ignition plate, test, problem fixed. :)

While the typical problem would be looked at as a possible bad coil pack, check the #6 plug. We only have 3 coils and therefore (I forget what Don said it was called) both plugs fire at the same time. One spark is wasted, one is used.

Therefore check #6 and the coil tower on #3, it's also possible the tower is broken or cracked. It may also be your ignition control module.

For those of us who aren't so savvy.. what is JY ?

Thanks.

JY= junkyard or auto wrecker, aka cheap parts.

no spark on number 3 plug

thanks for the info. i have a 96 bonny se can i take the parts off the 96 se for my97 ssei will it work.

Chuckiec4 has a 96 bonne SE at home also. I looked up the part numbers and the coil packs are a different number between the 97SSEi and the 96SE ignition coil packs, but, would he be able to use a pack from the 96 to see if the pack on the 97 is bad? I know it's a different part number, but if it fits, would it work?

Thanks.
Sam B.

The SSEi packs throw a hotter spark. For testing, it will be fine. If that doesn't work out, pull all three coil packs and swap the ICM located underneath them.

Both the ICM & coils would have to be good if #6 is firing. You might want to double check #3 & #6. How are you checking for spark?

The guy who checked for spark, took the wires off, and got zapped hard on every one, except the #3. Also, upon doing the diagnostic, the #3 was misfiring, so, this seemed consistant.

ChuckiC4 took 1 coil pack off the '96 SE and replaced the #3 / #6 coil pack on the '97 SSEi, and the check engine light went off, and the car runs good again.

He is planning to replace all 3 coil packs, and probably the ICM as well. Do you guys suggest a specific brand? or should we get OEM? Where do you guys buy your coils? Is there a good source for good prices on good parts?

Thanks for the advice, and for helping us get this Bonne up and running again. I can't tell you what a relief it is to see him happy again.

Any chance you got that on video?

Glad you found the problem.

Maybe we should ask him to check my spark, and get it on video. Kinda ghetto way to tell, but we don't have any of those blinky things..

Many like the MSD 8224 coils as replacements. You could also go to most parts stores, etc for them.
