New Transmission?

1994 Bonneville SSEi, 179,000, CAI, TR 55's

I have been having multiple transmission problems ranging from shudders to slips. I think this spring is going to be time for a used or re manufactured trans. As of right now it shudders when it is cold and I hear a loud rumble/grind from the firewall in front of me. It also has a hard time reaching high speeds compared to how it used to and I can definetly feel it slipping quite often. I also hear a "boing" every now and then after I come to a complete stop. (It sounds like a spring relieving tension all at once.)

So... I will be in the market for a new or used transmission and was wondering if the 1994 SSEi came with the HD (Heavy Duty) or normal 4T60-E? I thought that the HD was only used in the older 90's cars but I am not sure.

You will need an HD.

Being a 4T60, that 179K is very impressive. Often the diff's would try to break out of the casing long before that. The reason I mention this is your description of the grinding etc. It becomes more costly to rebuild when the diff has turned to metal soup and has broken the trans casing.

So... The 4T60 Heavy Duty is the transmission that is in there now? And if I get the the HD 4T60-E I should just be able to swap out the trans? Should I go ahead and get a new torque converter right away??

Thanks,
Josh

I would replace the torque converter right away. Easier to do it now
