New scanner,

I took 'Christine' out for a long ride today, with the wife driving so it would get a good workout. Had the scanner hooked up the whole time and could use some help with the results.

Outside air temp - - 55F
road dry.

O2S (mv) - - - 60 - 805
crosscounts - - 6 -12

MAF (gr/sec) ---up to 30
IAT --- hwy 57F city 65F

Trans Temp ----- maxed out at 210 going up an 8% grade for 3 miles
KS counter ----- Maxed out at 170
Coolant temp --- 190F

My intermittent trans problem showed up after the run up the hill. No overdrive and the following scan results:

With cruise control on at 70 mph and 3000 rpm shifter in OD

TCC applied -------------- NO
TCC Duty Cyc (%) --------0
TCC Slip RPM -------------200 cruise -255 coasting
TCC selenoid -------------OFF
Throttle (%) -------------19

I then went to the second set of paremeters on the scan tool and found that I had a code 740 TCC clutch failure.

I cleared the code and within a few seconds I had OD again. However by this time the trans temp had dropped to 185F so I don't know if clearing the code or the drop in temp is what helped out with the OD.

After OD started working the scanner had the following

Speed 70 mph RPM 1900 (from tach)

TCC applied ---------- YES
TCC Duty Cyc (%) -------32
TCC Slip RPM ----------13
TCC Selenoid ----------ON

So is this telling me that I need a trans cooler?
Is it the PCM telling the trans not to go into overdrive or is there a problem within the transmission?

1. That's a lot of knock counts. Look into that.

2. Did you watch the RPM slip during light acceleration with the TCC locked? If it stays down around 12-15, your TCC at least isn't slipping. Not below a certain temp anyway. I think 210 is fine for short term tranny temps, but I could be wrong.

With the TCC locked it was only slipping by 13 rpm. It was when OD wasn't working and the TCC was OFF that it was slipping and yes I could watch it slipping via the scanner. The harder the acceleration the more the slip. When coasting the slip went into the minus category.

The knock counts had me concerned also. 0 knock retard though. Maybe the NA models don't have that feature?
I was getting up to 35 degrees advance on a hard acceleration and about 15 -20 cruising.
