Default How can you tell if a coil pack failed?

My car was idleing rough last week so i poked around under the hood to find rust on one of the prongs of one coil pack. i got all the rust off and it ran perfect after that. then yesterday, i'm driving to work, and at a light my car just starts shaking pretty bad. there were no knocking noises but my car sounded/ran like crap. could this be a failed coil pack? i was thinking b/c of the poor conduction it wore the crap out of it.

Park your car in a dark garage or outside at night in a dark area. Pull off 1 spark plug wire on each coil (assuming you don't know which coil is bad) and lay the wire on top of the connection enough that the spark will try to go to the cable but you will still be able to see it, and have someone look under the hood while you are trying to start the car and have them tell you if they see spark. Simple as that.

thanks guys. it was a failed coil pack. i took it to my mechanic and he checked the current for all of the cylinders. first he was like well were gonna have to replace the board and probably all 3 coils. i was like, well, lets just try the one coil. he found a used one slapped it on and it seemed good but a spark was jumping. he sprayed the coils w/ a water bottle to see which wire was sparking. he replaced that wire and it was all good. 60 bucks later i was on the road. that was ThE cheapest repair on this car. i looked to see what a used coil pack costs at a pull-it and it was like 45 so i made out pretty good.
