Default Rebuilding top end.

In about 3 weeks I am going to rebuild the top end of the motor on my 97 SSEi mainly because I am leaking oil that I can see burning off my exhaust (which scares me to death after seeing pictures of fires). I am planning on going all the way to intake manifold replacing gaskets and what not, because to my knowledge they have never been replaced and there is still dex-cool in there which I will be getting rid of also.

So what I want to do with this thread is make a comprehensive list of the gaskets I will need. I am of course planning on aluminum frame gaskets or whatever it is all you guys use.

Also I am going to rebuild the nosecone because I am leaking supercharger oil. So I will need to bearings and whatever is involved there.

I am also thinking about porting the intake manifold and/or supercharger. Is this difficult? Could a 17 yr old such as myself have the ability to do this? Does anybody have any ported manifolds or supercharger housing they are willing to part with?

Anything I am missing?

Thank you in advance!!!

If you are leaking oil, make sure that you replace the valve cover gaskets. That is likely where the oil leak is from

The oil is just as likely leaking from the corner of the LIM gaskets.

If you've never ported before, don't even attempt it unless you have spare parts. If you're going to port the supercharger, forget it unless you have the tools to replace the bearings and seals in it.

I want to replace the bearings and seals in the supercharger regardless in the snout at least. Thats where the oil would be leaking from correct?

Do I need supercharger o-ring seals? Just saw them on intense' website and wondering where they are for? Are they injecter o-rings?

Also going to throw in 180* t-stat while i'm at it.

So here is the list so far:

LIM gaskets $50 are these the aluminum frames I hear everyone talking about?

Valve cover gaskets $35

Supercharger gasket $9

Thermostat gasket $4

T-stat o-ring seal $5

180* t-stat $10

Snout bearings $20
(Do I need a snout seal?)

Supercharger oil $10

Injecter o-rings?
What do I need to remove the injectors? is there a "special" tool?

Does anyone have a ported IM or is anyone willing to port one for me if I can find one?

Anything that I am missing?

Blue threadlocker for LIM bolts Thread sealant for ECT sensor and any other bolts that may got into waterjacket. Copper RTV for corners on LIM gaskets. Torque wrench and list of torque values and sequences. There are many good threads on this forum that go into great detail (many pics) on the procedure you are about to attempt. Use the "Search" feature (upper right of browser screen) and also read Techinfo. Spend some time reading and you'll have an excellent understanding of what the job involves. Once started, don't be afraid to ask questions or for help here at this forum. There are many extremely knowledgeable people here that are very willing to help. Good luck.

Yes you need a snout seal with those bearings.

www.rollingperformance.com

You also need a hydraulic press to remove the old bearings and install the new ones.

Your question about the LIM can be answered in a vague manner. There isn't alot to be gained by port-matching the S2 L67 LIM to the heads. It'* a very close match already. The L36 is the worst, and SHOULD be matched or at least cleaned up at the first opportunity.

so does that mean that gm tightened up their tolerances in their castings from series 1 to series 2 L67? because my series one L67 had a VERY noticable difference.

Yes. From worst to best:

L36
92-94 L27
92-95 L67
96-newer L67

Yes, I have ported even some S2 L67 manifolds, but there'* really very little needed for stock heads, and it doesn't make ALOT of difference. I'd say it'* probably not noticable. More of a 'shave job' than anything, especially when compared to the others.
