new here, oil pressure/clanking noise problem
 

hey, to you all, having a problem w/ my 93 sse, i ran out of gas the other day and had to coerce it(shift to N and practicly flood the thing to get it to start back up then shift to D) about a block and a half, i made it just to the pump, got a little gas and started to leave, it was running like complete crap, and makeing alot of noise, wouldnt shift correctly and w/ it floored would only achieve about 30mph. then i realized i wasnt getting any oil pressure.

made it home eventually wich was only about 2 miles. the next morning it ran fine and i thought god was surely playing tricks on me, but as soon as i thought that, it happend again, the oil pressure dropped and the clanking noise returned, since then it will run fine till it gets a little warm then the oil pressure drops to the red and it dies.

i did put some oil in it the night it happend, too much acctually by about 3 quarts so i know its not low on oil,

Drain the oil and return it to its proper level at once BEFORE starting the engine again. An overfill of that magnitude has immersed the crankshaft and reciprocating assembly in oil. As the engine runs, it's being whipped into foam and is not properly lubricating the bearings.

As to running like crap, if you ran the tank completely dry you probably got into the small amount of water and crud every car accumulates over time in the bottom of the tank. Change the fuel filter and add fresh gasoline and that problem should go away.

If you can't do this work yourself have the car TOWED into a repair shop and DON'T START THE ENGINE.

No. However, the oil pressure sending units in these cars are a known weak point.

Start with my advice and go from there.

And "clanking" noise? Could you elaborate? Where from, how loud?

Unlikely. If the engine is turning over, it has oil pressure.

Have you looked at the oil? Does it look like chocolate milk? Is the coolant bottle empty?

I'm wondering if you've had an upper intake manifold failure.

there are a few parts missing from the story, if that'll help


it wasnt really a straight home trip, i picked up my wife and we went to advance auto, thats when i put in the gallon of oil, we then drove to the store then put some more gas in and then we drove home, all the time i was pretty much thrashing the car, getting it to go anywhere and stay running. but it does run fine while it is cold, w/ a little noise.

the oil on the dip stick doesnt look very runny, at least not too much more than old warm oil...

also, another strange thing that occured is that the trunck button and horn wich never worked started working.

Now it's beginning to sound electrical, which would explain the oil pressure sender, if it's bad or doesn't have enough voltage to work well.

c'mon, other boarders, help us out here. .

ok, so i changed the oil finally, now it seems to have some oil pressure for the most part, but it's got white smoke and it extremely lacks power, still has a strong knock also...

just plugs?.. or fuel? or did i mess up the head gasket or something?

Head gaskets rarely fail, and 93's don't suffer from upper intake manifold failures.

I strongly suggest a wet and dry compression check before driving any further.
