need tranny answer asap

Getting slight thump as tranny transitions from 2nd to 1st gear when slowing to a stop. Also, when checking tranny fluid does the engine need to be running?, or do I just need to make sure the engine is at operating temp?

BillBoost37 11-10-2006 08:31 AM

Not sure about the thump

To check,
Engine running, up to temp. Then go through all the gears, hop out..and check with engine running.

Thanks!

You need to have both the trans and the engine at operating temp to check the fluid. After that, check the trans oil for proper level, smell, and look at the color. Wipe it on a clean white rag of some sort. Then get back to us.

Fluid level is right on. Does anyone know what I might be getting this thump? It is not a big thump but I can notice it whenever it downshifts to first gear. Just started about 3 days ago.

laydbaak 11-10-2006 08:43 AM

Fluid is clean, no burnt smell.

Mike 11-10-2006 08:43 AM

Possibly a sticking solenoid, check ball, or blocked passages.

When was the last time you changed the fluid in it?

Ha, got ya Boosty.

Tranny was rebuilt about 2 and half years ago. Added tranny cooler. Only happens when rolling to a slow stop. During quick stops I do not feel it.

BillBoost37 11-10-2006 08:53 AM

What's that 2.5 years in mileage?

laydbaak 11-10-2006 08:55 AM

about 14000 miles.

BillBoost37 11-10-2006 08:56 AM

It was rebuilt 14K ago? hmmm I'd think the thump was a clutch or something starting to go.. but that's low mileage for that to happen.

laydbaak 11-10-2006 08:58 AM

Would this be something a tranny shop could scan for?

BillBoost37 11-10-2006 09:03 AM

They should be able to.

I'm thinking it may be a soleniod or something going bad.. but as mentioned..I'm no trans expert.

laydbaak 11-10-2006 09:08 AM

That's ok. You have GOT to more than I do. Thanks for all the quick replies. Maybe some one else will have a few more suggestions.
