I think my alt. is going out. Tonight when I put my turn single on and slowed down to turn my headlights and dash lights went dim and I looked on the battery gauge and it almost went into the red zone. Are those signs of altenator is going bad. Does anyone know how much they cost, I don't have alot of money but I'm sure it needs replacing. I need to find one cheap as possible that'* as good as stock one or a little higher one that can handle more, proly sounds too good to be true to find one tho.

If you have another vehicle or a buddy, 1. take it off
then take it to autozone, take your battery too

If you can, get a good warranty. I put a cheapo on a couple months ago, but I don't plan on it lasting. My end goal is one of the DP performance Alts. Check out Ty'* offerings. If it'* too rich for you, Autozone should back up their stuff. Definitely have the battery checked also though. A bad batter can kill an alternator, and an alternator can kill a battery. Works both ways.

I was looking at DP'* alts but 250 bucks for an alt. is way too much for me. And there'* no Autozone around here, just NAPA.

well in saskatchewan tutu i had my stock one rebuilt(at a little local shop) once and it went out again....they gave me a 2 year warrenty no matter what happens to the alt so i took it back and they fixed ituyp agian this time with "heavy duty" parts he said and its been perfect ever since and handles a nice load too when we hooked up a stereo for a wee bit. still got over a year as well for warrenty. all for 60 bucks.

Yes. Speaking as one whose car is on its fourth alternator... Get a rebuilt AC-Delco if you can find one, with a good warranty (you may need it anyway). Are there Lee Auto stores in your area?

Don't replace the battery until after you have dealt with the alternator problem, although giving it a thorough charging right now wouldn't hurt. The new alternator will keep the battery charged; your current one is not, and the battery right now is pretty pooped from having to support the failing alternator while you're idling, but it should bounce back once you get the alternator replaced.

Nope just NAPA, or a GM dealer, but I'm sure that'* expensive.

Well, heck, start hitting the junkyards; you should find plenty of alternators to pick from. I don't think the Bonneville units are too rare, are they? Same as those of Grand Ams, Grand Prix, etc? Also other full-size GM cars like Park Avenues? The junkyard should have a Hollander Interchange manual to tell you for sure.

Are the alt'* from Autozone good. There'* one about 45 min. drive from here. I will proly change the battery just to be safe, cause guess what battery is in there. NAPA Gold battery, it did very good in winter to tell you the truth, it has 800 CA and 700CCA, not to shaby.

O ya it did it to me again. I was in Mcdonald'* drive thru and the lights go dim and the gauge dropped almost to the red. In normal conditions should it be reading 14, mine is usally bout half way to 3/4 ways to the 14 mark.
