Default Several Questions Relating To LIM Gasket Replacement

Three questions: First, with 107k on the engine, would it be wise to replace the water pump when I do the LIM gaskets. I have no issues with it now, but they are not very expensive and would seem to be a good time to do it.

Second, Is it really necessary to remove a knock sensor to drain the block when doing the LIM? I would think draining radiator would lower water level enough. I have heard the knock sensors can be a PITA to get at.

Third, what type/brand of thread coating do you recommend for bolts that go into water jackets? Thanx

Depends if you plan on keeping the car. It sounds like you plan on keeping it, so I would say yes, go ahead and replace.

I don't think this is necessary

I asked a similar question once about the WP. The general consensus was, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."

As to the coolant...if all you're looking to do is remove enough coolant to do the LIM gaskets, you can easily just siphon the radiator dry with a long piece of tubing and a bucket. If, on the other hand, you are looking to get every last trace of Dexcool out of your engine, a lengthy hose flushing with the knock sensors removed is the easiest way I know of to flush and drain the block completely.

For sealing bolts into water jackets, I've used this:
http://www.permatex.com/products/aut...ad_Sealant.htm
(Contains PTFE according to MSDS. Stuff also works great on transmission cooler fittings, coolant level sensor in LIM, oil level sensor in oil pan, washer fluid level sensor in washer reservoir, etc.)

The most effective and quickest way to drain the coolant is to syphon the radiator using some 1/4 hose shoved down all the way to the bottom of the rad so you can drain the entire rad. As long as you get one gallon of coolant syphoned out, you will be fine. I did my water pump and didn't lose a drop.

Thanks for comments so far. I had Dex flushed out last summer by a shop, so that is not an issue.

I wouldn't mess with the water pump. I sold my 99 SE this past summer with 177,000 on the clock with the original water pump. No issues with it.

I like using the pet **** on the driver'* side bottom of the radiator for draining the coolant. No need to remove knock sensors.

I replaced the waterpump on mine when I did the rebuild, just because it was cheap and the best time to do it. But when I do customers cars, I usually dont unless I notice it leaking. I use "Right Stuff" black sealant on mine and havent had a single one come back excecpt for an oil change. JMO
