Looking at '94 with tranny problem...
A guy I know is selling his '94 SE at a good price, but it has a tranny issue. Here is how he has described it to me:
The car needs to warm up before being driven, or it slips. If you manually start in (1), then it'* okay. Once it'* warm, it'* okay. He poured in some lucas tranny stuff once, and that mostly fixed it, but now he had it flushed, and it'* back again.
Obviously it doesn't sound good, but I thought I'd bounce it off of the experts before writing it off.

Sticky shift solonoid. If it slipped when hot, I'd stay the hell away.
The fact that the lucas helped, and the manual shifting leads me to this conclusion. If the price was right, I'd be tempted. Drive it yourself.

Assuming that it is a sticking solenoid, what is involved in fixing that (where are they)?
If I drive it, what should I be looking for as good or bad signs? If it'* a bad solenoid, should it behave as if it'* still in neutral when it'* "slipping"?
As for the pump theory: Wouldn't that get worse as the fluid heated up and became thinner? I do agree with the lucas part of that theory though.

I do feel if its the pump the problem will get worse... My friends tranny is still kicking it along, but its worse in the morning... Once warm its ok, untill it cools off again... Really slow to go in gear when cold... When its warm there are no issues...
Also is the ses light on in the car?
If its the shift solenoid that that would be located on the valve body... Its an on off solenoid... The A and B solinoids are used in diffrent on off patterns for first, second, 3rd and 4th...
If you got the car for cheap, and worse came to worse, you could always get a good known 94 Trans... If you can find a good one

He didn't mention the SES light being on or not.
His original asking price was $1700, but that fell to $1400 in a week for lack of offers. That'* still a lot of cash to gamble with. If there was some way to know for sure what the problem was, AND it was a reasonably easy fix, I might bite. But it'* just a SE with hubcaps, and it'* not my favorite color, so I don't care to gamble that much on it. What I really want is a nice Olds 88 of that era, but those are hard to come by.
Anyway, no decision made yet. I'll still listen to all input.

yeah they should.
my opinion was that the clutch packs are starting to work their way out...
just based on the fact that it slipped less when it was in, more when it was out.
additionally, when you plop it into 1, it increased the line pressure a fair amount over having it in drive, which would explain why it works okay when cold and in 1.
that'* just my opinion though...
