Looking to buy a 98SE, what should he look out for?
Hey guys,
A friend of mine is looking into purchasing a 98 SE.
He says there are about 260,000kms on the engine, and the asking price is around $3500 Cdn. The seller says the kms are "highway", and here in NS that is entirely possible.
What should he be looking for?
Obvious things are plastic intake failure and transmission issues.
How does one inspect the intake for possible problems?
Transmission... I guess just a test drive should do... pay attention to slippage.
Thanks

For a 98 that'* very possible. I would think the intake would have failed by now. Look for worn struts, endlinks.
SE doesn't have all the gadgets to go bad like CCR.and ELC in most cases..so there'* not much.
Look for driverside carpet being wet...

OK cool.... thanks
He did get the car.... for $2500.... only issue was the battery was dead.... but that was probably due to sitting for so long. The guy gave him a brand new battery for it.
Green 98 SE
EDIT - Btw.... I'm selling him my stock cd player from my 97 SSEi.... it should install in very easy right?

Yep, the CD player should pop right in.
Just remind him to watch the coolant. Only other issues I've had with my 98 SE is the grill broke. But a little JB Weld fixed her right up. And the Fuel Pressure Regulator (that was a recall item, so it may already be fixed)

also, if the exhaust has a sweet smell to it, it is probably burning dexcool. At which point I would tell him to do the upper and lower gaskets. If he didn't get the service record for the car I would do those anyway for saftey sake.
