I need to replace the wiper/turn signal/dimmer switch in my '97 SSEi. The stalk is fine, it'* the switch on the steering column that'* worn out. What'* the proper procedure? Thanks!

Here is a very brief description on this project:

You will need a steering wheel puller and airbag clock spring removal tool. **some auto parts stores rent these out**

You will need to disconnect the battery.

Then remove the airbag fuse.

Now wait 10 to 15 minutes for all the power to the air bag system to drain all the way down so you don't have a accidental deployment. I use that time to remove panels and things that are in the way. And to read up on instructions on using the tools needed for the job.

Remove the multi function arm...and the wire connector that connects inside the column. Use a quick outward pull to pop it out.

Now disconnect the airbag from the steering wheel....4 torx screws...2 on each side behind the steering wheel. And one or two connections behind the air bag...for the bag and the steering wheel controls I believe. Also disconnect the horn connector to. It comes out like a bulb. Push in and turn to release.

Than remove the big nut holding on the wheel. And also the 4 little bolts holding it on as well.

Now put on the puller... which will come with instructions on how to remove any steering wheel. You will find that it may not just pop off easily. If it feels like it is binding all you have to do is take a hammer and firmly hit the center shaft of the steering column dead center and that forceful bump will knock it loose.

Special note on removing the clock spring! Be very Very careful to not screw up the clock spring when you remove it. In fact before you do, take note on how its installed paying attention to the orientation of the arrows. Maybe even take a photo of it when you get that far. • If the clock spring is not adjusted properly, the spring wire in the clock spring could over-wind and break when the steering wheel is turned. Always adjust the clock spring after re-installing it.

Now hook up the clock spring tool and turn down the tool to put tension on the spring to remove the lock spring/clip. DO THIS VERY CAREFULLY AS THINGS CAN FLY OFF AND HURT YOU. Wear goggles.

Go under the dash and find the airbag clock spring harness connector and the multi function switch harness connector. Disconnect them.

You will have to remove the lower hush panel and the upper column panel as well.

Now pull/fish out the clock spring and harness.

There is one or two moldings that you will have to remove on the left side of the column.

You will have to remove the ignition switch to.

Also when you get the replacement 'multi function switch' you will have to connect two small wires from the cars harness into it. When you take out the old one you will see what I mean.

Fish the new harness down the steering column and hook it up. If it gets hard to fish all the wire harnesses down there it makes it easir to pull on the connectors as you are pushing from the top.

And install all other parts you took off in reverse.
