I have had my 1999 Bonny since 1990; bot w/ 19k miles and now I have 150k! The car has been great and problem-free, except for one annoying thing - the horn. I've searched through the various forums/threads here & occasionally see others mentioning problems with their horn as well.

Anyway, I'm hoping someone could shed some light on what I could do to fix my problem. Basically, the horn works about 50% of the time. And this has been since I first purchased my car. Of course, I never know when that 50% is going to be. And unfortunately, when a car is changing lanes into mine, it usually doesn't work.

Some time back, my mechanic had changed the wire coil assembly that goes inside the steering wheel at a cost of about $250, but that didn't solve the problem. So, I'm kind of stuck driving an otherwise fantastic car, with a horn I can't rely on. And don't get me wrong, I'm not the kind of guy that goes around honking his horn when he'* annoyed with someone. That'* not my style. But heck, if someone is about to veer in to me, I'd at least like to be able to sound my horn. Is that all that all that unreasonable???

One of the toughest things to chase down and fix is an occasional electrical problem. I would unplug the horn and put a test lamp jumpered between the horns wires and clamp the horn pad down on the steering wheel. Chase the wires from the test lamp towards the firewall. When the light illuminates, you've found a short in the wire and can then repair it.

Wow! Thanks Kevin! If this works, I'll be forever grateful. For some reason, I was thinking the wire problem would be somewhere down in the steering column. That would, of course, be very hard to fix and very expensive.

I'll try this and see if I can track down the short. Tell me, can I just get a test light at Radio Shack, or should I go somewhere like Kragan Auto Supply? Thanks very much for your help!

An auto supply should have them. As well you can in a pinch make your own from an automotive light bulb and some wire.

BTW, Your first post says you've had your 99 since 90. Somehow I'm not sure that adds up.

I pre-ordered a '99 prototype in 1990. lol - No, you got me there! I guess with my horn-stress syndrome, I got a little careless. I bought my Bonny in 2000. Except for the horn, it'* been bullet-proof.
