Misfiring Cylinder Problem: Fixed
 

Today I was on my way to school on the highway. I went to pass someone, and when I accelerated, nothing happened. The RPM gauge (tachometer?) dropped down to highway cruising level about 1.5K as I accelereated. I took my foot off the gas, assuming my tranny was slipping like it sometimes does. Tried accelerating again, nothing. One more time, nothing. Then after a few expletives, I gave it some gas and it caught. During the second, third, and fourth time, my check engine light flashed maybe 4-5 times, then lit solid. I got to school fine and back without noticing anything out of the ordinary. I am going to Autozone to get the codes scanned tomorrow after school, and I am going to take my dads car to work today. Any advice on what symptoms to look for before getting it scanned or advice (I assume it's still fine to drive). This post is pretty worthless without the codes, but maybe someone has had the same thing happen to them. Thank you guys, I hope whatever it is- it's cheap. I have absolutely zero funds right now.

Did you recently hit any big puddles before this started acting up?
When was the last plug wire change?

Yeah I've hit serious puddles.

Havent done wires since Ive had it (2 years.)

That might be the answer...maybe one's arching a little.

When you hit puddles you just don't know what electrical system got shorted out.
Dry it out a while and re-try it. Maybe the codes will help.

Update:
Drove to and from work without problems last night. Drove to school without a problem. Was coming home from school and just before the highway the check engine light magically disappeared. I had thought they needed to be cleared with a scanner, guess not. I was driving a buddy home from school, and I pulled up his driveway (a hill if it matters), let him out, and backed down without turning the car off. As I got into the street, 3 dings for the check gauges light, and the car died. Same thing that happened when i ran out of gas about a year ago. My gas gauge is totally FUBARed. I started her up and pulled it to the side of the road. My bud drove me back home, grabbed my gas can, put in a gallon of gas into the car, and drove off. No gauges, lights, everything normal. I went straight to the gas station which is about 2 miles away. Filled it up. 6 gallons. Topped off. Now, 1+6 is not equal to filling my tank. So that rules that out of the equation. I went straight home without problems, haven't left since. Can autozone scan the car if the check engine light is on? Is there anything else I should be looking for?

Yes, Autozone will be able to see history codes.

Your light went off because whatever the code that set it on, also met a condition that turned it back off.

Ding ding ding stall... Check the connector to the ignition control module and ensure your coils are not loose.

Thanks Bill for all your help. got it scanned today, 1 code. Cylinder 4 Misfire. I am going to pick up a set of 6 plugs (probably NgK TR 55's from what I gather on the forums), and have my dad help me swap them over Thursday. Too bad cylinder four is in the back, seems like a bitch to get to from my breif glance at it. I'll scan after that and see if anything comes up. Next will be wires then coil packs. I hope it's just plugs or wires, but I've never changed either so i need to research to find out what I am doing first. No sense in paying a mechanic 70 bucks to install 10 bucks in plugs.

Forget the coil packs if they check out ok using the procedure in Techinfo.

Took a look at the plugs and wires tonight, they are in rough shape. The plugs are damn near cooked onto the engine and the wires are corroding a little at the ends. I am going to try to get them done Sunday. What wires should I run? NGK TR55 plugs will be at the ends.
