Default Mind of her own???

Hello I have a 92 and I love her but,,, shes gives me hell

I have a 92 Bonneville and I'v had so many weird things happen with this car and this is a the most recent.

I noticed during January that sometimes when I put the car into drive or reverse that she would seem to stay in neutral. After the car had warmed up for a few mins. I would simply put her in drive or reverse and no problem off I went.
"Thought It problem was do to the cold"
Then a few weeks ago, I went to start her up and nothing. I had her towed to my house and the tow truck drive went so see if she would start and sure enough, She started right up. So thinking my starter was going I replaced it. One week later on my way to work, I Jumped in the car and it would'nt start again. After a few mins of losing my mind, I thought that when I had her towed last week we had to put the car in the ON position and put her into neutral to move it, So I stuck reverse and put her in park and boom,,,, She started. Today she did the same thing. It seems shes not in park all the way, SO I fallowed what I did last time, And she started up. Now I do have a small Trasmission leak if it helps any. I was told Just to keep a eye on it.
I really need to find out whats going on with her. Please If Anyone as any Idea

i may be wrong, but your shifter cable could be messed up.... if its not completely shifting in the gears, it could be causing a "neutral" situation and if its not going completely into park, it would lock you out from starting it.

You probably wont' get any code from a reader, unless your SES light is on. It sounds like your linkage is goofed up and your neutral/park safety switch is not engaged.

You might want to take it into a transmission shop and get an estimate on it to see how much something like that might cost.

First thing you will want to do is check your trans fluid level. How'* the color? When'* the last time the fluid and filter was changed. If you don't know, have that done. Take a look at your neutral safety switch. Sounds like it'* out of adjustment or going bad.

Hello Everyone,
Ok went to a Jiffy Lube to drop some oil off. I asked them to take a look at all my fluids.(Which were good and clean) So I started to explain what was going on with the car and he had me put the car into the on position and move it into neutral then into park.
I think We found the problem he said,,,, My linkage was loose. He tightened it up and said that it would cause that problem I was having (My car not starting) because everytime I moved the shifter from a gear into park the linkage would move causing It to sometimes not to go into park all the way or just reading that it wasnt in park. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that he fix the problem.. So my new question is,,, Does it make sence? I can see it happening but Im not Transmission Savy.

Thanks for you reponses above guys Katiejames

The linkage on the transmission, if loose; will cause what you experienced. If this takes care of the problem, you can rest easy.
