Default MSD coils killed my alternator and my battery........

I have a Bonneville SSEi '93 without many mods (only a K&N and exhaust)

I recently replaced my coils with the MSD Blaster coils, keeping the stock harness.
I also used Tylor 8mm wires and Bosh platinum plugs.

When I first installed them, I heard a kind of slight whining coming form the Alternator (at first I thought it was from the supercharger and only realized it was the Alt. when it died)

Later, after a long drive (about 100 mi.) after i got back to my neighborhood, I noticed that when I would step on the brakes, the ABS and traction control lights would turn on and off, and when i pressed the Gas pedal, the voltage dash-light would turn on and off. I parked the car, turned it off and couldn't start it. When it would crank, ALL of my dash lights would turn on and off with each click of the starter slipping.

I swapped all the mods out (for warranty and the mechanics ended up changing my alternator and battery.

Now I have a shiny new alternator but I'm afraid to put the MSDs back in.....

Can anyone set me on the path to enlightenment :?:

The alternator was stock.

Was already planning on switching to NGK iridiums.

I'm just wondering why the battery died.......

And do the MSD coils really give me a better spark without the DIS?

Thanks!

1) Sometimes they just die

2) Good, NGK'* are better.

3) If the alt wasn't charging your battery didnt get recharged.

4) They should. Unless everyones been fibbing all this time.

Agreed. Plus, the coils are driven by the alternator and/or battery, not the other way around, so I don't see how they could do the alternator any harm.

What'* more likely, given the reputation Bonnes have for eating alternators, is that yours was about to die anyway; your installing new coils at about the same time was just one big co-inky-dink.

I suspect your battery would probably have recovered as soon as the new alternator started charging it again, but it'* too late now...

I've been running the MDS coils for months now. Like acg_ssei said, the Bonnivells are know for eating alts. I personally am on #4 or #5. This last one I went with a good quality aftermarket 200 amp alt. No problems since.

I also recently lost a battery due to its lack of holding a full charge and what seemed to be loose post connections. What I have found in the past is this: If either your alternator or battery starts to go bad (wether you notice or not), and it isn't changed out right away, the other one is soon to follow.
