how does the crank pulley come off
i got the bolt out without any problems but the pulley itself won't budge. do i need a puller or am i not trying hard enough?

Yes, you need a puller. You can rent the kit at Autozone, but the 3 bolts that go through the slots are the wrong sizes. You need to buy the 3 bolts you need (I forget the size) and use them with a HB puller.

Take the puller and the new pulley to the store with you to size the right bolts. I recall they may be M6 thread, but don't remember the length. You'll also need some washers as the hex head is too small and may slip between the slots.
