LoUd NoIsE?
 

I was driving home from my girlfriends house tonight and after a stop sign i accelerated and i hear this loud poping noise. Its deafening, very very loud and when under any load its very annoying and embarrassing. Pull into my house open the hood, dont smell any exhaust leaks, muffler and everything looks fine so i decide to run my codes again. Still showing a code 43 and i get a new code, #55, Im a little confused because on one part of techinfo it says

55 - Exahust Gas Recirculation Fault ( EGR Solenoid # 3 )

And another part of techinfo says ECM, the first one where it says 198X-1993 code retrieval says the ECM and the 1992 Supercharge Vin#L says the 55.

Will a failed EGR solenoid cause that loud ticking noise?!? And if so where do i get one? Will autozone carry one?

You can lube the egr solenoid to free it up but sure if it will the make the popping sound you describe? Use some wd-40 or similar on the solenoid.

Like Pdad said, the 91-93 digital EGR's can usually be fixed by cleaning and lubing the solonoid shafts. He saw this first hand on my car at Woodburn while we were prepping for the track. I used some No-Touch rain shield to free it up and clear the code ;)

It's a good thing, too, as the digital EGR's are very expensive, and hard to find in wrecking yards, considering the limited years they were used. I've never heard of one making loud noises, though. You may want to check your evap canister solonoid (disconnect it and see if the noise goes away) or remove your oil fill cap and check for the noise (lay a rag over the valve cover to prevent oil spatter). If the oil fill cap solves the noise problem, replace the PCV valve. It's under the SC cover, towards the rear of the top of the blower casing under a black square cover.

Well i must have been incredibly stupid or tired last night because this morning i went out to check on it again, figured i'd stick my hand in the back of the engine and sure enough theres hot air sputtering out, cant determine if its the pipe or if its my manifold, taking it into the shop tomorrow to see whats wrong. And the EGR code, can that be related to an exhaust leak, will that throw it?

Perhaps the exhaust manifold gasket? It happened to me once - my car drove and sounded like ass.

This leak won't cause an EGR fault. Do a search on "digital EGR" here, you'll find plenty on cleaning and lubing it.

The exhaust leak is likely the packing "donut gasket" at the transition to the downpipe. Make sure both bolts are tight and the springs aren't missing/broken.
