OK...follow me for a sec and tell me if I'm on the right track.

Series I and Series II intake manifolds.....plastic . Stock cooling system consists of 1 or 2 fans, 195 t-stat, dexcool or green coolant and a heavy duty rad.

Options. Tranny cooler bolted to rad, and 180T-stat to open up the cooling system before engine temps ever reach 200 degrees F. At that temp (typ. in idle or in traffic) the fans will come on at 200 degrees F to supplement the lack of air passing front of the car thru the rad fins etc.

Now. Can these fans be changed or recalibrated to turn on at 185 or 190 degress F, so, with a 180 stat, fans that come on earlier cooling the engine with some kind of moving air thusly you can prolong the life of that intake manifold. I have a tendancy to believe that upper intake failure occurs when supplementary cooling methods are ignored, or simply not understood.

Am I on the right track?

ok i walked outside, started up my car, temp gage reads like maybe 150(i havent been home very long) i pop the hood and both fans are running.why?

Hey..i dunno...I'm just takin shots in the dark wondering as to what we can do to prevent upper intake failure. Its heat related...so I was brainstorming. I'm waiting the braintrust to smack me down here

My fans don't come on until I get very hot...but the car never gets that hot...ie 180 T is working, plus my coolant system is brand spanking new.

I have 2 fans, one for the AC and the other for cooling. They rarely come on. But my intake is metal....so, I have less to sweat about

I believe they both come on automatically if the A/C is on. That'* the source of the old tip about how if your car is overheating in traffic, you should turn the A/C _on_ rather than keeping it _off_: because its fan override will get the fans going even if the thermal switch hasn't already done so.

ahhh that would make sense cause my A/C is always on max, full blower as high as it can possibly go,its stankin hot here and it doesnt take long for a dark green car with a dark interior to get a little balmy.

Does the temperature activation set-point for the fans reside in the PCM or the PROM? I am not aware that the set-point can be changed. If it was in the PROM, it would be easier to change, but regardless you would probably have to change out a part of the circuitry in the PCM.

You can also help it along by popping the sunroof while you're driving. Don't roll it all the way open; just pop the back edge up. That'll create an exhaust that pulls the air from the dash vents really well.

Sunroof? hahahaha thats funny stuff.im not privileged to have one.but the AC works just fine.i could keep it cooler by keepin my windows ed but i dont like to do that.

I was wondering the same thing...if I leave my car to idle for about 15 min, the temp gauge will hit 200F, maybe even 205F...only then will the fans kick in. If the vehicle is in motion, then there is no problem. Any way to get the fans to kick in sooner?
