Looking at 1997 SSEi (175k for $10,800)

Hey all...

I'm currently looking at a black 1997 SSEi with 175,000kms on it.
Asking price is$10,800.

I wanted to know is there anything I should ask about the car before I buy?
Anything I should look at, you know, stuff that fails on these cars that might make me reconsider?

Actually the car is in TO (Ontario) and I'm in NS. But Jim is going to take a look (and maybe even a test drive) for me, and see if it's worth while. If it looks good I'm going to fly up and drive her back home.

I just wanted to know if anyone had any advice/suggestions on what to look for, or ask about.

Try to get a better deal

Sounds like a nice car, but....
I only paid $5000 US (INCLUDING tax, fees, etc.) for my clean, loaded '96 SSEi over 9 months ago. It had 117,000 miles, new tires, and was good to go.
True, I'm a wheeling-dealing salesman and was born to negotiate, but the price you mentioned, even in Canadian dollars, sounds a little high.
I would suggest making a counteroffer for WAY less $$ and waving cash or a checkbook at the sellers nose.
Can't hurt to try.... I doubt that anyone reading this earns thousands of dollars in a matter of minutes, but saving that kind of after-tax money for a little effort is sweet.
Regardless, I hope that you get the right car for a great price.
Good luck!

Wasnt I the one who posted that car in another tread.. I think i should get commission...

randallons 08-27-2003 01:49 AM

That's too high. Look at these cars on ebay, they are not going for much at all. You can get a nice 97 ish SSE with less than 70,000 miles for under $6,000 US, easy. I juts got my bonnie a month ago, paid $6,800 with 48,000 Miles or about 76KM, in near mint condition.

Merlin1, Just picked up a copy of our weekly auto shopper and found two Bonnevilles where I live to show comparison of prices.
1. 2001Bonneville SE $10,995.00 49,000 miles
2. 1998 Bonneville Dk. Red (like mine) $7995.00 44,000 miles

lol... funny trofeo....

Yea I thought it was kinda high, esp for the KMs on the car. I'm going to wait until SE89 has inspected it, and then make a counter offer.

Assuming the car is in really good condition, what would be a good price to pay for it?

1992 trofeo 08-27-2003 02:29 PM

um

wernt you the one who turned down 10k for your car?
serously you shoulda taken it.

Id say offer 9,500 would be fine... probably sell it for 10,800 but whatever

Brian95Blown 08-27-2003 04:45 PM

Too high! I paid only $3,ooo for my 95 SSEi with 100,000 miles.

Merlin 91/97 08-27-2003 08:50 PM

Ok guys... here's the update...

Jim was by this evening and looked over the car.
He said it was in near mint shape and definately gets his "Seal of Approval"
He took it for a spin and said it pulls like a champ. :D

Everything is good, if not better except for a few details....

First... the theftloc system is malfuncting and the fuse for the system has to be pulled. Otherwise the car alarm constantly goes off. Now I 2x checked with him, the stereo works fine, and the horn stills works (seperate horn for the alarm).

Second... no keyless entry... wtf?? I didn't think it was possible to get a Bonnie w/o keyless entry, esp a SSEi. The guy selling the car checked with the dealer to see if he could just buy the remotes... nadda... she didn't have the tranmitter thing installed.

Third... small (Jim says VERY small) spot of paint is bubbling on the front hood. He said some sand/grit paper would smooth it out.

Fourth..... the car isn't for sale "right now". The guy is getting a company car and doesn't want to part w/ the Bonnie until he gets his new wheels. Which might not be for 3 weeks or more. :x Which puts a big X on my thoughts of flying up this weekend.

I just wanted some thoughts / opinions on those facts.

PS-Jim will be emailing me the pix later.... and then I'll post them here.

1992 trofeo 08-27-2003 08:56 PM

um

show him some Green... if still no walk away..
If he needs a car till he gets a company one... a rental caviler is like 15buxx(cdn) a day

Merlin 91/97 08-27-2003 09:15 PM

How much green should I flash trofeo?

I mean I can afford to spend $10,800+tax, but I don't want to spend anymore then I have to (of course).

Based on the info above, what does anyone think would be a good fair price?
(I just never bought a used car before)

PS-The Kelley Blue book values for the car are $9,500 - $13,815 (Cdn).

Another killer is my taxes when I bring it back to NS, I have to pay 15%. But I think I have a way to minimze that, a little.

1992 trofeo 08-27-2003 09:32 PM

tax?

I havnt bought a used car eighter! well.. 1 wrecked, 1 rust bucket... but wasnt the sales tax already PAYED  ?
I Havnt seen these cars around here to much... im near industry.. not like im on the coast or near the land of the newly weds and nearly deads... So 10,700 for that car here.. its a steal! so I have no clue. Your best bet would be to convers with jim alittle more about the differences in hes aroura and the ssei
(Pros/Cons) he payed 8500? I think you could offer 9,000 and get away with it...

OLBlueEyesBonne 08-27-2003 10:52 PM

Come down to Detroit Lakes, Minnesota and bring about $6800 (US) and you can have a fully loaded SSEI with only about 123k. I personally would go and buy this car myself (given it runs and drives as per the mileage) if I could afford a newer lower mileage car than my 1994 SLE that has 194,524 miles (calculates into 32x,xxx kilometers). At least it only needs a new wiring harness in the tranny, a new fuel pump and a new power steering pump (this car is really starting to show it's mileage, but hopefully in the next 3 months I'll be able to get a low mileage engine and have that put in with the 4t60-e HD tranny out of a 1993 Park Avenue Ultra supercharged.
Anyhow heres the lowdown:

um.

I think he was shootin for black :?:

grahn 08-28-2003 03:30 PM

I just run a 1997 SSei with 175,000 kms thru the Canadian black book site( there is a backdoor thru the Toyota.ca website!!!)
It came back with a range from $6384 - $7884 wholesale. I wouldn't pay more than $1000-$1500 over wholesale from a private person.......

I paid $2000 over wholesale for my 1998 SSei with 72,000 kms on it from a highend dealership here in Calgary( came with a GM optimum warranty, etc...)

Another thing to watch for with vehicles from TO is the rust factor( undercarrage, etc) Any sane person in THAT area gives the undercarrage a good coat of tar when the car is new...........

Jim W 08-28-2003 04:04 PM

I personally drove that car yesterday, the 175 000 km SSEi from 1997, its unreal, to me, I'd drop 10G on it no sweat. Its worth and for the record, rust is not a bigger problem in the Toronto area in comparsion to say the East coast where salt is an issue. By default our cars should be undercoated and rust checked annually, unless you live in tropical climes.

1992 trofeo 08-28-2003 07:00 PM

yeah

Was the highend gmc dealship shaw? That dealership is a gooder... My mom bought her buick down there a year ago, my dad wanted the hummer  ... H2 that is... they live just west of you in canmore... I told them they shoulda moved to victoria island like the other retired people...

grahn 08-29-2003 11:27 AM

No, the dealership was Jack Carter on Mcleod Trail south. Shaw is good too but they would rather sell you a GMC truck!!!!

Cochrane is between Calgary and Canmore on 1a highway, of course......prettiest area in the world!!!!...at the foot of the Rocky Mtns! :D

BigAl 08-29-2003 05:42 PM

I paid $15k for my 97 in 2001 and it had 34,000 miles on it. Too High!!

Merlin 91/97 08-29-2003 06:58 PM

Well I think I'm going to take it.... the guy said he can't sell it until he gets his new company car... which might be a week or more.

Here's the photos that Jim took of the car....

Nice taillights :)

Yea.. lots of native reserves from canmore to cochrane.. but its all good... Only reason why my parents dont live in banff is because they would have to buy a buissness too (you have to have a reason to live there)
I'm stuck in northern alberta untill I can retire... :x

BonneMeMN 08-31-2003 10:24 PM

Looks nice!!! Is this Merlin2 then? Methinks it should be!
