Long crank to start & stalls on decell
 

92 Bonneville SE L series. Most everytime I start the vehicle it takes a couple turns of the key to get the car started. I have seen a couple bulletins out there that maybe say the Idle Air Control Motor or maybe Starter Enable Relay for a malfunctioning pass key. I have checked the codes and come up with code 58 which is pass key fuel enable circuit singal lost or VATS alert. The IAC motor is about 100 bucks and the relay is about 12 so I figure I would go ahead and replace as this seems like it could be the problem. The one other thing that happens is that when the car warms up to normal operating temps if I let the car idle for a couple min and then drive slowly or even kick down the throttle and let off, it will go below idle speed and stall, this is what makes me thinks the IAC motor is out. I am just looking for any other options anyone may think.

Okay, if the starter motor won't crank when you twist the key, and your SECURITY light comes on, then the VATS system is triggering, apparently because it can't detect your using the correct key at startup time. But if you _can_ crank the starter, it's not a VATS problem.

Do you have a second ignition key you can try? If your current one is dirty or worn, you might be getting only intermittent contact between the resistor pellet (in the key) and the ignition switch, and if the connection breaks while you're driving, the car won't shut down but the warning light will come on and (I think) the error code will set.

Your idle-speed/stalling problems might have something to do with the IAC motor, but the VATS system is not involved in that.

I do have 2 keys and have tried both and come up with the same problem. As far as the VATS, the starter does engage but doesn't start. As far as the security light coming on, other than the initial start up, it doesn't come on again. Now with the IAC motor, can that produce a code 58 or no? Because if the IAC motor is bad that also can cause the long crank.

Sounds like a bad fuel pressure regulator to me.

Pressure regulator, I just happen to check that and there is fuel leaking slightly. I think I will start there.

but, would that give me a code 58? Of course there could be more than 1 problem here too.

Well if the regulator is bad it might trigger the other code.. Its happend to me before. One thing wrong but the other thing is acting up to and it jots down that code. :?

I can't find Code 58.... :twisted: I don't think there is a code 58
