List of CEL codes for Pontiac Bonneville+Exhaust Temp sensor
Hello,
I am looking for complete list of codes for "Check Engine Light" for Pontiac Bonneville 1996. Here is what happened: Check Engine light came on and I went to see a mechanic. What he showed me is when you turn off the engine and then turn the key on, it will (Check engine light) will flash twice. He told me it is code 22. And if, for example, it does one long blink, and two short ones - it's code 122, etc. So, for code 22 he told me it is Exhaust Temperature sensor. Tried resetting the computer, but it didn't work. Told me to drive for a couple more days and to see if the problem goes away. Now, when I did search here and on google, I saw that codes through check engine light work only for cars <1993. I am really confused now. If there is such a list, can someone please point me to it. And please let me know what you think about code 22=Exhaust Temperature Sensor. Vitaliy |
You have no exhaust temp sensor. You cannot get any codes from a 94+ without a scantool.

Because he mentioned both words "Temperature" and "Oxygen". I can snap a pitcure of it in the morning when it's not dark. He said it's 4-wire sensor and costs roughly $150 (I'm in Canada). Thanks. |
You do have a heated oxygen sensor (maybe two, I can't remember). It should be 4 wire, and cost something like that, with labor. Make sure he puts in a AC Delco sensor. No Bosch. But nothing that senses the exhaust temp.
I think a blinking SES (or CEL, again, my Series II knowledge is a little lacking) means an emissions control problem. But I don't think it will point to a specific problem without a scantool. |
What the check engine light does when you turn the key to the one position is simply run a bulb test to show you that the bulb is not burned out. It does not provide any information about codes. You'll need a code reader to pull those.

The car has 2 O2 sensors... One in the rear manifold and the other behind the cat...
There is no way he extracted codes from your car... This is not a Dodge by any means.. You have to use a scan tool to extract codes from this car... Take the car to an Advance or Autozone and have the codes read... BTW your car uses 4 didget codes... as in 0122 no such code as a 22 on a 96... Sorry, I thought you meant the CEL was blinking after the initial startup bulb check.

I purchased OBD II reader and it showed the problems with MAP sensor, not O2 sensor. I haven't fixed it yet, so I don't know if that it true, but it certainly beats changing things randomly and hoping it will work.
