Default 1996 Fuel Pump Replacement

I recently purchased a 1996 Bonneville LE for $2000. Not supercharged.

Seemed perfect until today, when it became rather difficult to start and the engine started sputtering hard the first 15-20 seconds.

I brought it in for a full diagnostic ($4, and the diagnostic revealed the fuel pump is bad. It is pumping 20PSI when it should be between 45 to 50PSI.

So... I need to replace that. They quoted $590 at the shop, but I've found where I can get a brand new fuel pump for $60. Now if I had to pay the $600 for the repair I would feel just straight-up ripped off... but at $60 I don't really mind.

I was told the fuel pump is in the gas tank... was wondering how I go about lowering that gas tank, what equipment/tools I need, opening? the gas tank, and replacing the pump. Was also wondering what else I should take care of while I'm down there (fuel filter, etc.), and if there'* anything I should know about (such as seals, gaskets, etc.).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This has been outlined a couple of times here. A search should link you to a good topic or two.

Make sure you get a new strainer with the pump, and look into the procedure to clean the fuel level sender while you are in there. And look in the search results for the fuel tank strap bolts and nut clips. You may need new ones of the originals have rusted.

nothing more than an eraser and wiping the contacts. that is if the fingers aren't wore down.

My suggestion is that the level sensor is delicate enough and not to disturb it if at all possible.

Experience and Mechanic buddy experience says you don't monkey and mess up a $130 part if you don't have to. I pulled my pump (5th time I think) and that was the end of the sender. Nothing was going to fix it.... just dead and looked fine.
