L36 + New Oxygen Sensor + Gutted Airbox/!MAFScreen = P0171

Hey all,
By now I am sure the moderators are like, "Oh no, Not this guy again", but I have been having a problem with my car in terms of the fuel economy/air fuel ratio. I just replaced my front oxygen sensor with a new Denso unit, and I have seen an increase of fuel economy (my original goal). However, my SES light has been coming on and off in two day intervals since the new Oxygen sensor was installed, and gutting my airbox/descreening my MAF in a very careful manner. Code P0171 has been coming up on my SES light (thanks to Autozone). This is a lean condition in "bank 1". Can anybody tell me what I should do, I put everything in/gutted everything very carefully giving care to the sensing components of all the electronics involved. Thanks.

Did you touch the MAF sensor at all? Try putting the screen back in. Also check your battery cable connections, clean the terminals of corrosion and reinstall them snugly.

Agreed put your MAF screen back in, clear the code and see if it comes back. The screen is there to straighten out the airflow over the MAF so it can function properly.

We have seen some that had issues with the Screen Removal... Even I went back tot he Screen and the Fueling was a bit jumpy.. Could never get it quite right till I reinstalled that screen..

The Scree keeps the air Laminar across the MAF, without the screen its hard to get a good true reading on the Mss of air flowing through the TB..

I'd also like to see what happens with the screen installed and if the code comes back again..

I'd hate to say it, but the screen has gone to heaven. I don't know how you can put it in/get it out without breaking it (or spending a decent amount of time doing so). I did not touch the sensor at all, but i poked the screen with my finger, causing it to fracture. I just pulled it out from there. My LS1 Camaro has the !MAF Screen done to it, and theres no adverse effects there. I guess every setup is different.

Post a topic in the wanted section and I bet someone can hook you up. Do you still have the ring that locks the screen to the TB?

Yea, I just pulled the screen out. There wasn't a ring that came out with it. I am guessing that it just snaps on? Please advise.
