Ok, my 1993 SSE seems to have a voltmeter Problem, it goes full scale apon starting the engine, however dies once started... Now I know there is an Alternator (Duh) Ya dummy your alternator isnt working light and that light is not giving me any condition. So here is what i have done, started the car, removed the pos terminal from the battery to verify the alt is working/charging and it is working fine. what can I do to get the volt meter to work again? No I don't have a wiring diagram as of yet. I do have the GM service manual cd'* coming though. Anyone have a volt meter problem that has fixed it? here is something else I found out but not sure of it'* significance, the Alternator was replaced with one from a lesabre, same year.

Are your voltages normal during running conditions?

The full-scale sweep is just a 'self test'. That comes from the PCM. If you have no reading after that, I'd say a broken wire or something disconnected. Fuddy has the factory wiring diagram for 93. Should be able to help.

Anybody else with an SSE (not an SE or SSEi, different clusters) near you? You could try a cluster swap if you got desperate.

Oh, so it reads dead then except for the test sweep. I would bet that the inside of the instrument cluster probably has a bad contact somewhere. Only way to fix it is to take it apart or replace the cluster if that'* the case.

But I want to check first to see that the voltmeter doesn't have some sort of a direct connection to the alternator.

Yes its the test sweep that it does, after that its nothing... I'll try to pull the alternator off and look at the connetions. Best I can do for now. I'll keep ya all posted.

The voltmeter is driven off the same power feed and ground as the tachometer and the coolant temperature gauge. So if both of those work, I would imagine something is not making the right contact inside the gages cluster, or the circuitry driving the voltmeter inside the gages cluster is shot.
