Default Tranny woes! 96 lss non supercharged

Ok, yesterday my olds tranny was shifting fine, now today i get
on the highway to go to school and it wouldn't shift past 2nd into 3 or OD. GRR What could possibly be wrong? The check engine light came on. My dad is taking it to a guy to check it out. Could it just be a sielenoid or what, the fluid is full, not burnt or smelly. It just started! I had to drive about 15 miles in 2nd gear to get to school. I dont have the $$ to get it fixed is the problem. Its got 171k on it. What can i do? any help would be nice. Thanks, Taylor

It'* tough to diagnose w/o the codes. Might be a soleniod, might be something else.

The guy should hook up a code reader first thing. Let us know what codes he pulls.

Yeah don't let your dad just force the mechanic to do it if I'm not mistaken some of the solenoids can be fixed with the trans still in the car

looks like he cant do anything till tomorrow, so ill make sure he reads the codes. Its got the little Coffee can looking thing on the front of the motor/tranny. I think its a 4t60e if im not mistaken.

My 95 ssei did the same thing but it had 231k and needed suspension, exhaust, and heater core. But it knocked and wouldnt shift where this just wont shift. Maybe ill just sell it and buy a SSE or something for around 1k
