Default 95 Bonneville SSEi hot weather problems

I'm posting this for my parents.
Searched the archives and haven't found any similar problems.

1995 Bonneville SSEi
Starts and runs good (except rough idle) in cold weather. When the temp is above 60 degrees F, the car starts acting like the rev limiter is kicking in, after driving for awhile.
this progressivly gets worse, untill the car will bairly move or rev above 1000 rpm. If you turn the car off and let it sit for 20-30 minutes, it starts up find and drives a while till it has the same problems.

The temp gauge on the car reads a normal temp the whole time

The problem started when the temp was over 80, and has progressivly gotten worse over the last 6 months.

I believe that when the problem is occuring, you can not even rev the car in neutral

The engine has never compleatly stalled, just no power.

My father also stated that he thinks the car runs rich, from looking at the exhaust pipe.

Yes, the check engine light comes on, but my dad'* too cheap to have a dealer scan it, and the local autozone is dumbfounded by the OBDII connector and an OBD I system.

Any help or advice would be appriciated! thanks!

While I think you need a scan first, it MAY not show anything. Do it anyway.

I'm suspecting a catalytic converter and O2 sensor may fix your problem. As the Cat heats up in it'* possibly clogged condition, the elements swell, restricting exhaust flow. The engine can't rev against all that backpressure.

You should get to an exhaust shop and have the cat checked for flow. If it is the problem, the O2 sensor running you rich caused it. O2'* should be changed at about 60k miles when they start getting tired.

Sounds like symptoms I had when my fuel pump was dying, but more extreme. If the backpressure test reveals nothing, have the fuel pressure tested.

I talked my dad into buying (or having me buy) him a scanner tool.

Am I correct in my assumption that the Actron 9150 includes the correct cable to connect to a 95?

thanks for the replys

While I agree you should have a scantool, it won't tell you much about exhaust backpressure or fuel pressure.

I don't know about the 9150, but I know the 9110 and 9145 will read a 95 with the right cable.

This sounds kinda almost like the fuel pump issues I was having with my 94 SE. Do you have access to a fuel pressure gauge? I'd suggest checking it out.

Also, about the scanner -- Get the Actron CP9115 with the GM Catridge (CP9111F).

http://cgi.ebay.com/Scan-Tool-with-1...QQcmdZViewItem

Then call Actron directly and order the CP9145 cable. Not only does it have the right connector, but its a long cable, plus it draws power directly from the PCM hookup and doesn't require the cigarette lighter.

Total cost will run you about 145 bucks.

A word of caution -- Before you order the scantool, I'd call Actron up and make sure they have the CP9145 cable in stock. They don't make them anymore and last month when I ordered mine, they were down to 5. I'm pretty sure they'll still have 1 or 2 left as its not a very popular item.

This is the scanner that I use with my car incidently

It looks like the Actron cp9150, is just a cp9145 with a set of cables

http://www.actron.com/product_detail.php?pid=16143

"Kit Includes:

* SUPER AutoScanner CP9145 Base Unit
* OBD II Cable
* GM OBD I ALDL Cable CP9127 (PDF)
* Ford & Lincoln-Mercury OBD I EEC-IV Cable CP9128 (PDF)
* Chrysler OBD I SCI Cable CP9129 (PDF)
* 8-Foot Extension Cable
* Cigarette Lighter Adapter
* Manual/CD-ROM with over 5,000 code definitions
* Hard Carrying Case"

It says it comes with "GM OBD I ALDL Cable CP9127". I just wanted to make sure it was the correct cable.

Thank you for the suggestion about the cheaper scanner, I just thought for a little (while) quite a bit extra, I will be able to use it on other cars also.

9115 is the part number for the CARTRIDGE. Not the scantool. The scantool is the 9110 with the 9115 cartridge.
