Ignition Module question on a 1992 Bonneville SE... HELP
 

Hello again everyone,
I thought by changing the cam sensor and crank sensor at the same time that my problems were solved, I was wrong. I will start at the beginning. The car would just cut out while driving and occasionaly not start but turn over. I knew there was an ignition problem, the tach would not move. I checked the codes, came up with code 41 so i changed the crank sensor and figured while i was into it i'd change the cam sensor. I drove the car a week or better and the Check engine light came back on and i could feel a stumble. Now occasionally the car will not start, but it will turn over just fine. I also checked fuel pressure and it was fine. I'm thinking it may be the Ignition mudule, I dont think there is a way to test this expensive pig, so how do i tell which system i have? Magnavox or Delco? It's damn cold and snowy here, but the junk yard has been calling my name.

Is the car still giving you a code 41? When you changed the cam sensor, did you check the condition of the interrupter magnet that provides the signal to the cam sensor?

[edit] If the magnet gets loose, it can cause the symptoms you describe, and they do get loose. You can get an idea of what your magnet is supposed to look and feel like by going to an autoparts store and having them pull the one for your car off the shelf. Magnavox has three plug wire terminals on both sides. Delco has all six on the right side.

Thanks for the info. You seem to be pretty up on this type of car, any ideas? This only happens occasionally and it hasnt stalled while driving again since the cam and crank sensor has been replaced.

Can you snap a pic of your ICM and coils and post it? Don't count on having your ICM tested. The results they give you are typically wrong. The best troubleshooting is to 'borrow' a set from another 3800 and see how it goes.

Sometimes a coil or ICM can have heat-related failures. Yours obviously isn't a coil. It would still start, but not run well. It could be an ICM, or the interruptor magnet.

If it's the magnet, the car will start 1 out of 6 times or so. Or is it FAIL to start one out of 6?

I don't have experience with the magnet failure, but it would make sense to start on average 1 out of six times. If the ECM sees no cam signal, it'll default to a given timing. 6 cylinders, so there is a 1 out of six chance the timing is correct to fire.
