Ignition/fuel problem (hard start/stalls/rough idle)

I did a bad thing, and I dont know whats wrong or if somthing is wrong?
I went out for a drive (45minutes) mostly highway, but I did go on the gas a little hard. Anyway all of a sudden I mash the gas at 60km/h, and I hear a whisle like sound (not the downshift/growl 5krpm sound) This keeps going for a while, so I baby it for 20minutes or so...
Then I turn a corner, and hit the gas again and see if that problem still there. YES, but this time it sputters and dies...
pull over
shut everything off
pop the hood, and the header is glowing... (at this point im swearing up a storm)
Then went back in the car, and fires right up (im way out in the boonies so I greatfully baby it back to civilization)...
I went to a friends acredge, and go inside for an hour...
Drive home, and I have perfect accel, and the world is good again... or is it??

--My outside 'puller fan' is not working(been meaning to put a new one in)--

Glowing header.....clogged catalytic converter perhaps??

Burgundy_Boat 03-20-2004 11:25 AM

ok, on the glowing header, if anyone thinks it's abnormal i suggest they go out at night and make a WOT run to 60 or 70, then get on the brakes, pull over, shut off your headlights and pop the hood, check out the front and rear manifolds, the rear will be easier to notice, but the front will be glowing as well. i don't know why everyone is like OMG it's glowing after i was romping on it. the exhaust gets rather warm under high load or wide throttle openings. a glowing manifold (as long as it's not really bright yellow) is not abnormal after romping on it. however, if your just driving normally, and your not romping on it or putting it under high load, then it might be time to check into why it's glowing. but not after you've been romping on it, that's normal

that being said, tofu's stalling problem indicates that there is a problem

Fair enough, I've never romped on it and then popped the hood, I'll have to try it ;)

it looks pretty cool, and it gives you an idea of just what the engine is dealing with when you ask it to give it's all

Your trans has nothing to do with stumbling and stalling of the motor. Has the problem come back?

1992 trofeo 03-20-2004 12:34 PM

I havnt been driving it sense last night(it was completly fine on the way home from my friends house). Before I parked it at my friends house for an hour it was o-k aslong as I didnt take it to WOT. The reason I say tranny is that it didnt shift down like it should.

The motor- 3,000kms on it with 2 oil changes under its belt at (600kms/2300kms) Everything was done.

You have either an ignition (most likely) or fuel delivery (less likely) problem.

Maybe my brand new stock coils just needed to cool down? weird.

willwren 03-20-2004 12:43 PM

If that's the case, it's time to replace them. They shouldn't do that in heat. I had one do that, but it was 85k miles old.

I doubt you'll find anything, but did you pull PCM codes?
