UIM failure symptoms
Can anyone provide me with the symptoms of a UIM failure or pictures of what it looks like? Or point me in the right direction?
Thanks!
Thanks!

Okay, thanks! Are there visible symptoms of the leak around the EGR and TB without taking the TB off?
I recently got the car with 73000 miles and haven't noticed a drop in coolant levels...

Your EGR is buried behind the TB and there'* no way to tell without taking it off. However, even a visual inspection isn't sufficient. The plastic of the UIM around the EGR stovepipe may LOOK ok, but it could be severely corroded and soft.

If you take off the snorkel, open the TB blade and look inside witha small flashlight you should be able to see where the egr tube pokes up. Any goop around it would be an indicator of a leak. The dealer usually puts in some stop-leak tar-like additive which explains the goop.
If you don't know the age of your UIM you should be able to figure it out from the clock like markings on top of it, There will be arrows pointing to the day, month, year it was made and if its original I would definitely plan on doing the whole thing (UIM & LIM gasket) as preventative maintenance.

One definite symptom is if you're constantly topping off the coolant reservoir, and you don't know where the coolant (Dex-Cool if you're still using it) is going.
(Oops! Nevermind. I just reread your second post )

Series 1 only has an aluminum upper through PART of 1992. All others are plastic, but don't have the problem nonetheless. The problem started in 1995.

Keep in mind that the LIM gasket is also prone to failure. Symptoms there, beside losing coolant, is that in the earlier stages, you may see coolant starting to wick its way up the LIM bolts.
