Hows the oil look? gray.....dark brown....watery......black....
When is the last time you did a complete tune-up? Does your exhaust smell sweet? |
oil is dark brown....not sure bout tune up, only had car bout a year...id say its sort of a sweet smell
|
Could be a vacuum leak, or a clogged fuel filter. What is your skill level with engines?
|
You said you have a sweet smell from the exhaust?
Coolant usually smells sweet. Please take a look at the overflow container for the coolant on the passenger side fender. Is the container empty or very low? |
Check the underside of the oil filler cap. Is there any sludge of foam there? Kind of sounding like it might be a LIM or UIM gasket

I had the same issue on my car for over a year. Im not to car savvy either, but im learning
I have the same car you do. What i did to fix the issue was replace the -Fuel filter (like 15$) -spark plugs (2$ bucks a pop, you prob need 6) -transmission fluid and filter (25$ or so total) -PVC valve (5$) -Oil change (20$) -Air filter (8$) I also changed my Radiator, serpentine belt, Master Brake Cylinder and booster, fuses but those are also unrelated Would also make sure all you fluid levels are good The below link is my forum thread explaining the issues i was having my car. https://www.gmforum.com/t282850/ Im also going to be replacing my Crankshaft Position Sensor. But these are normal tune up things that the car needs every 12,000-20,000miles. I neglected mine for over 70,000 and she was hating me, now she purrrrrrrrrrrssss and starts ohh so much better. |
i found one vacuum line connector with a cut in it and another is so worn out that its pinched shut when car is running and a spark plug wire with a cut in it...i checked the overflow tank and it is low...no sludge under oil cap either...

Fix everything you find wrong. Then see how it runs. If you still have problems, let us know and we will keep moving on.

Troubleshooting is always a pain in the rear for me. Had a similar situation with the Wife's 4Runner. Took it to the dealer (I like the mechanics there) and had them troubleshoot. Found a bad distributor. Paid them the troubleshooting fee and brought it home and swapped in a new distributor and was back on the road. Sure I paid out some money to find out the problem but it saved me from pulling out the hair I have left and I can swap out parts easy enough.
So far every problem I have noticed with my Bonneville this site has made mention of it and the fixes for it. In fact I have a oil pressure sender/sensor on order for tomorrow and will be swapping that out. Good luck, Mike |
