I smell gas

Anyone smell gas when you are stopped at a light or when you get out of the car?

singscountry1967 08-05-2007 04:18 PM

Please post what year / model car you have. If it's a mechanical problem, I'll move it to the appropriate folder based upon your year. Thanks!

Thanks...I started to assume based upon your name, but that isn't always the case. ;)

The gearheads can better answer your question...but let me ask a few more to give them more info. I'll assume you've had the car for a while and this is a new issue.

Is the gas smell always present, or only when the gas tank is full, half, etc?
When was the last time you replaced the fuel filter?

BlownBonny95 08-05-2007 04:41 PM

Actually i just bought this car, I've had it for about two weeks. I don't know when or if the fuel filter has ben changed. I havent filled the tank up all the way but i smell it at 3/4 1/2 and 1/4 full

BlownBonny95 08-05-2007 04:43 PM

My dads friend (who i bought the car from) said he had never noticed it befor.

singscountry1967 08-05-2007 04:47 PM

Ah...okay. But no, it's not a normal thing to smell and I'd be careful until the problem can be figured out. There's been issues with faulty fuel regulators (though I don't know if it was with the 95's or not...) ....it could be anything from rusty fuel filter, bad fuel lines, or a hole in the tank itself. But I'll let the Gearheads help you out from here.

When you get a chance, edit your Profile (link at the top of the page) and add your year/model to your signature section...that way it will be present on all your posts and you won't need to clarify it each time.

Good luck! 8)

I was. It was a slow leak at the fuel line just after the filter. Crawl under the passenger side, before he rear tire, and have a peek with the engine running.

Unless the tank was overfilled and the excess went into the charcoal canister...I'd assume you have a fuel leak and need to start looking for the leak asap.
