I smell gas
 

I have noticed that when I stop I can smell raw gas, is this normal or is there somethingn wrong? I have not noticed any puddles and see no leaks. any ideas on where I should look for problems? Gas milage seems a bit low, around 20 mpg.

First place I'd look would be the vacuum line on the FPR, considering there was a recall on the 97's.

Any gas smell is bad news.

Is the AC on? If the smell is coming from the engine compartment, the smell may be more pronounced when the AC is on because it blows some of that air inside the cabin.

Look in the engine compartment and also under the entire car. Hopefully, fuel isn't dripping somewhere. If there's no dripping, look for fuel residue around the fuel injectors, fuel pressure regulator, fuel rail, fuel filter, and fuel lines. Another possibility is the fuel vapor canister or one of its vacuum hoses, but these need to be tested using a vacuum pump.

I checked all the injectors, and all looked good. When I have a chance this weekend I will try to check the hoses for anything obvious. I also checked the fuel lines and again, saw nothing that jumpped out at me. I only spell it when I'm in the car and I come to a stop. Like after I've been driving for a while. Then I pull it to the garage and nothing.

Cars have blown up and burned for the FPR recall in 97. Grand Prix and Bonneville alike.

Don't wait. Go out now and check. Particularly where I told you to check. Vacuum line to the FPR. Before and after driving.

If it looks good there, let us know, but I wanted to mention something here:

You said you only smell it after you come to a stop. Sometimes that indicates that the origin is behind you, or below you. Check your trunk to make sure none was spilled in it, and the fuel pump access in the trunk. (Correct me if the '97 doesn't have that access panel to the gas tank in the trunk).

But please check the vacuum line to the FPR as Will mentioned, ASAP!!

if you call this number 1-800-762-2737 and give them you'r vin number they will check to see if you'r cars recalls have been repaired or not. Did a recall search for you but could only find a recall for you'r seats.http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/pr...ls/results.cfm

The recall information has been posted on the forum a few times. I believe one thread was when Zuper8(?)s intake blew up. If interested, may want to do a search for that.

If all is good in the FPR and everything else, this may sound dumb but check ur gas-cap. When I had a bad gas-cap on my Sebring I'd only smell gas while stopping at a light. But Definetly check what the other guys said first!!

Ok, I checked the vaccum lines on the FPR and everything looks good, all lines are clean and no noticable problems. I pulled the line for only a second or two and had vaccum. So I don't think it's the FPR. I also checked the plugs to make sure nothing was fowled, all looked clean. I'm going to start crawling around under the car, check the fuel pump, etc. I don't think it's under the hood. I don't belive a fuel line is leaking as I never find any puddles. But I will look close anyways.
