Need help with transaxle options!
I've decided to replace the transaxle on my 95 SSEi. I believe it'* a 4T60E, code 5YNW.
Last 8 of vin: S4295499
I'm going to pull the old one myself, but I think doing a rebuild is too much for me.
(PS: My thanks to Bill for his engine hanger instructions, I start on that today)
My options as I see them are:
1) Take the old one to a local shop and have them rebuild it.
2) Get one pulled of a junker. Not considering this much as reliability is questionable.
3) Try to find a rebuilt from a local dealer.
4) Get a rebuild shipped from a remanufacturer. Any feedback on them or additional sources appreciated.
Phoenix Remanufactured Transmissions: $900ish shipped + core w/o TC
Coleman Taylor: $1300ish shipped + core w/ TC
Series One Performance: $2300ish + shipping + core w/o TC
The Series 1 seems a bit pricey. I haven't done any significant performance mods, though I have been thinking about them. I have done plugs & wires, new thermostat and a thorough cleaning a tune-up, new sensors and such.
I'm going to talk with some shops locally (Cary, NC) and find out all I can, but I'd really appreciate any suggestions.

A normal rebuild will be much cheaper with you doing the labor of removal and reinstall. I figure you will find 900-1300 is a local rebuild price ...especially if you pull the trans.

If you have the SSEi, then I do believe you have the 4T65-E, and not the 4T60-E. Its built stronger to handle the extra power from the */C.
Will be cheaper in the long run to rebuild it yourself. You can go online and get the ATSG manual for like $20-25 and immediately download it also. I got one for the 60-E, and mine is torn apart as we speak. Just awaiting parts. Um, I think a master rebuild kit would go about $300, and that replaces alot of stuff. Almost $700 in savings if you do it yourself. Manual is easy to understand. Only thing you need is some mechanical knowledge.

if im thinking right the 65 didn;lt start till 97
From 92-96 there was a 4T60-E normal and 4T60-E HD (hevey Duty) and 97+ there are 4T65-E Normal and HD

So, I was half right and half wrong. Still, he has different parts on the inside more than likely.
