ive notice on my engine on the driver side theres oil on the side of the block and also oil on my starter and little on my oil pan, i know the oil is coming from the manifold but does the upper manifold also leak or is it just the lower manifold that leaks all the time?

I think that the upper manifold leaks. Same with my car. Last weekend when I changed the water pump, the repairman told me that the upper intake leaks juuuuuust a liiiiitle bit.

I don't know if it can get serious over time. But I'll take care of it.

..... Anyway, he told me that these kind of leaks are common on the 3800'* Series II. I don't actually know how to fix it..... Sorry.

There should be NO oil in or thru the upper manifold. :?

I know, but these engines have minor leaks sometimes. It'* a hit-and-miss. It is not guaranteed that all of them have this problem......And that'* what I've been told. I'm no expert. :(

Right and wrong. The lower manifold has 4 seals total. One on each on the front and rear to meet with the heads, and one each on the ends of the block, left and right UNDER the LIM. The oil leak is a non-pressure 'splash' leak in these other seals under the LIM, between it and the block, in the corners where the head, LIM, and block all meet. Heat erodes the coreners.

You may be able to fix it for a year or two by degreasing the engine really well, and applying some sealer to this union.

The blue gaskets are the ones we're talking about. This is a pic with the LIM removed. The valve train splashes oil around, and the eroded ends of your stock seals allow it so splash out occasionally. In your case, from the lifter and pushrod of the #3 cylinder.

Yes the LIM can leak, but I said upper manifold for a reason.

i know that when I pulled off my upper, I had pools of oil sitting inside of my lower intake, from failed lower intake gaskets. made it hard to find the two 'hidden' bolts...

on that note, every pic I've seen of an upper intake repair in progress has shown signs of oil in the lower intake manifold. hmm...

if fsm'* have part numbers, then you can pm me part numbers, and i'll tell you if there'* a dimensional difference...

unfortunately, it'* hard to track down part numbers here. there'* only one system that i know of that allows queries from longer than 5 years ago. and on top of that, when a gasket is replaced in newer models, and it'* known to work okay with prior models, sometimes the database only shows the new part number... which makes it difficult to track down things like gasket thickness. that'* why you can be sure that when you order a replacement part, you're always getting the most up to date...
