HOW TO GUIDE -- Replacing fuel pump on a 92-99 -- 14 pics
This took me about 3 hours, taking my time.
Raise and support vehicle. http://www.mfxers.com/bc/fuelpump1.jpg Remove Gas Cap http://www.mfxers.com/bc/fuelpump2.jpg Remove excess fuel from system by using the schrader valve on the fuel rail. use shop towels or rags to do this. http://www.mfxers.com/bc/fuelpump3.jpg Remove 2 plastic retainers on the fuel lines. these allow you to drop the tank and remove the fuel line plastic connectors. Also disconnect the wiring harness from the fuel pump. http://www.mfxers.com/bc/fuelpump4.jpg Remove the passenger side rear 15MM bolt holding the strap, make sure the tank is supported by a jack. http://www.mfxers.com/bc/fuelpump5.jpg Remove the driver side rear 15mm bolt holding the strap. http://www.mfxers.com/bc/fuelpump6.jpg Here is a jack centered on the tank with the straps off. http://www.mfxers.com/bc/fuelpump7.jpg Remove fuel lines for the fill area. there are 2 of them. Remove the lines from tank itself, I chose to remove them from the fill lines as well to give them a good cleaning. http://www.mfxers.com/bc/fuelpump8.jpg Tank is removed after moving it around. Keep in mind I did remove the 2 15mm bolts holding the exhaust to the hangers in the rear of the car. I also removed the center exhaust holder thing with the 2 rubber rings. http://www.mfxers.com/bc/fuelpump9.jpg Here is how I supported the exhaust, notice it is off to the passenger side. http://www.mfxers.com/bc/fuelpump10.jpg Remove the retainer ring holding the sending unit to the tank. Notice the debris. I used duct tape on the inside of the tank and carefully swept all the dirt onto it so none of it could enter the tank. Take your time on this step. once you get all the easy dirt out use compressed air to blow out any other debris. http://www.mfxers.com/bc/fuelpump11.jpg Here is a photo of the old pump. http://www.mfxers.com/bc/fuelpump12.jpg New pump kit. Walboro. http://www.mfxers.com/bc/fuelpump13.jpg Here is the difference between them. http://www.mfxers.com/bc/fuelpump14.jpg Installation is reverse of removal. You may need to replace the straps if they are rusted out if you live in a place where rust is a problem. Overall an easy job to do with one person, but having a second person handy will speed up the process. |
At which step do you take a break to have a beer and light up a cigarette?

It took 2 beers to complete the project. |
Good write buddy...
I would suggest a board between the jack and tank. Also I tend to undo the filler hoses before the tank..but that's merely preference and in the end they both need to be done. Was that Walbro specific to the 93 year or is that a standard Walbro? |
