94 Bonneville rpms drops and stalls
Hi there,
I just picked up this Bonneville which is perfect in every way. Quite frankly, even though its a 94, I'm really in love with this car. It drives like silk (not counting the problems I'm about to list), the stereo sounds sweet;heck it even smells good..
.
.
Except for this tiny thing:
Some times, out of nowhere, the car will suddenly die, even if I'm driving. All the electronics stay on, but the engine stalls out. I put her in neutral and turn the key. Boom, everything works. Also.. when I'm stopped, I see the engine RPM almost fighting to keep her over 1k, like its having a car heart attack. Some times it wins the battle and I'll get a tiny kick and the car doesn't stall, others it'll stall out (neutral, restart).
Also, while the car is in park, if I rev the engine, it works great, it the RPMS climb like they're supposed to, however I can't get rapid acceleration. When I put her in gear and step on the gas, even if I peddle it to the metal the car slowly builds momentum.
Any thoughts? I'm hoping the extra detail might help you guys could offer because I've read all the various responses on this forum and another and I'm really concerned I'm going to wind up replacing everything under the sun. Any thoughts? Cam sensor maybe? (BTW the tranny shifts smooth)
Regards,
Aaron Schlesinger

The random stalling, is there any rhyme or reason to it? How often does it stall like that?
We have a 97 SSEi that maybe experiencing the same problem.
As for your other problems....Sound like a pretty descent exhaust leak.

Hmm.. Exhaust leak? Any thoughts if this is something internal, or part of the external undercarriage? As for the stalling, no there'* no real rhyme or reason to it, except that it is happening more often over the last two days.

Followup to 95 Bonneville RPMS drop and stalls
Hey folks - as a follow up to my stalling bonnie of doom, which I've heard is a common problem, here was the end result:
1) The main real problem: The Throttle Control Sensor was totally screwed up. This also turned out to be the factor in why I wasn't getting any acceleration or real horsepower from the car.
2) Low gas levels at times were causing the car to think it was totally out of gas when on a hill. I'm not sure if there'* a problem with the floater in the tank, but I'm not letting it below half a tank where I can avoid it.
Anywho.. my baby is smooth as silk and I'm in love with this car.
Regards,
Aaron

HEY DUDE , Having same prob with my 94 bonn,if it;* like mine it will throw no codes, either. since your don't stall, idle sensor or maf sensor, before changing these, try to take off air cleaner hose, while car is running spray throttle body cleaner into intake rev motor with free hand as it will stall, sometimes its just dirty, exhaust will show you if a puff of crap comes out, also tap with plastic end of screwdriver on sensors around intake while its running , listen if it falters at all,
