95 ODB-I Fault Codes
My apologies in advance for what is probably a repeat question, but...
I bought a 95 SE about a year ago with 49k miles on it. The car currently has 72k miles. Today at lunch my CEL came on and is beeping at me incessantly. I did some searches and found out that I have the ODB-II connector but it has non-ODB-II guts. So conventional ODB-II scanners do not work.
I tried, as one site suggested, shorting pins #5-6 on the ODB-II connector but it did not display the codes on the dash. Any idea how I can get to the codes? I'm stuck at work and don't want to drive it home if something is seriously wrong.
Thanks in advance!

You can't do it by jumping terminals. You need an OBD-1 scan tool with an OBD-2 style wiring harness for the diagnostic port on your car. You must have a scan tool that will be compatible with the 16-pin connector.

More information:
The CEL is on constantly. The "check guages" light comes on and off every few seconds, undoubtedly a result of a repeating error. Car is full of fuel. Same sound as the low fuel warning, though.
Tried ODB-II and that didn't work. Couldn't jumper it either.
This started around noon today at lunch. Parked the car and finished working for the day. Drove home and the car was repeatedly surging/slowing. So much that with my foot on the brake at a stop light, it would surge enough to overpower the brake a small amount. Not as bad as it sounds I guess, because I barely had my foot on the brake. But it jumps from idle (900 RPM) to 1200 or so and then back down. All accompanied of course by a never-ending symphony of check guages sounds.
Oh, I replaced the o2 sensor about 3 months ago.. and never had this problem before.

get it scanned & check for codes 032 EGR failure and 021 or 022 which is throttle position sensor high or low. I had something very similar happen a few months ago. I think the EGR valve went, which in turn caused the TPS to go. it only took 2 days before it was undrivable. Whenever the car was turned off, it would reset, seem to be fine on a restart then as soon as i stepped on teh gas, the code would throw and the car would suge and buck and not shift gears, very strange indeed. HOpefully its something simple and not as expensive as what i had tho.
