When the DIC detects that Something Bad has happened and wants to alert you (e.g. Low Fuel, Check Gauges, etc.), it does a rapid four dings, and then stops: DingDingDingDing. That'* the fastest you'll hear.
There are also slower speeds of chiming for different occasions, like if you left the lights on or if the brake fluid is low (I can't remember right now exactly how it plays those), but none of those will time out until the error condition is corrected.
Oh, hey, I found something else in the manual last night that I forgot to mention: Supposedly there is a Turn Signal Warning, for when you leave your turn signal on by mistake. It'* supposed to start chiming at you if the car has traveled 3/4 of a mile with the turn signal on. That'* news to me. Anyone ever seen that? I had never heard of that on a Pontiac before and I'm thinking it was something that never actually made it into production, like the 4-wheel steering option (which has a warning light for it in the gauge cluster even though it was never built). I'm going to try driving down a back road this evening with the turn signal on and see if that does anything.

Mine does it. I had to do it deliberately to check. With the HUD, it'* impossible to accidentally leave them on. Right in the line of site, to either side of the speed display.

FIRST, just check the fluid in your master cyl.. mine was a little low and i filled it back up and the light went off and has been off for about 2 months now. Yall are right, that chime is enough to bother the mess out of anyone!

So when you got yours to do that, what was the warning like? Was this a '93 SSEi or what?

Crap.....that might have been my 94 Roadmaster. I can't remember for sure. You might want to try for more than 3/4 of a mile. Look like an idiot for longer
I'll give mine a whirl again on the way home from work (if nobody is following me)
