OK, we took off the SC belt.
The SC coupler has about 1/4" of free play but when started the engine, it sounded the same.
Put the belt back on and no real change. Sometimes the engine quiets right down and does not make any noise but if you rev it just a little the noise comes back.

It doesn't sound good. :(

A light rapping knock and a squealing. Sure sounds like a rod bearing.

You can take off both belts with out touching the engine mount on a Series I. Did you take both off?

i had a very similar noise on my 92 L27. it ended up being the nosecone from the starter breaking, and a chuck of aluminum was clanking against the flywheel. may be worth checking.

Thanks John. People need to remember the Series 1 isn't a belt bitch like the 96-99 S2.

Both belts come completely off without messing with any mounts. That motor needs to be revved to about 3k in a quick stabbing motion with neither belt on, and the HB needs to be inspected.

You guys are right of course. It was very easy to take off both belts.

Now here is a vid of the last dying revs of this engine I think.

Revved from idle to 3000 rpm.
