lifter clatter on cold start up

lifter clatter on cold start up
have a lifters clatter for 2-3 sec on start up after letting it sit overnight it'* a 95 lss */c with 140k on it is there a tsb about this or a fix has anyone had this prob or herd of it by the way it running sinth oil in it

Never used the synthetic oil, but from what I've read hear, and heard elsewhere, it'* thinner than the old fossilized stuff. My guess is it'* just taking it those couple of seconds to fill in enough to stop the noise.
I'll let the experts give you the good advice, but mine would be a bit thicker oil. I ran 50 weight in an old truck that was noisy as hell, and that shut her right up. Do not do this to your Bonne tho!!

this is the first 3.8 that I have herd this on my 94 ssei did not do it and i have a 3.8 in a regal that is quiet I live in az so it is not cold here.It dose quiet down after the 2to4 sec :?:

We have a few 3800'* in the family. Once in a while we'll hear a few slight taps on cold start. If you are using synthetic, it is probably leaking down from the lifters. Once good oil pressure is established the lifter or lifters pump back up to take up the lash.
Synthetic is thinner and CAN cause lifter leakdown if well worn in lifters. I'd try good grade 10w-30 and see if that does not solve the noise problem, although I don't think we can classify this noise as a PROBLEM per se.

Oil restrictive pushrods? What are those? I want my pushrods full bore to pass as much oil to the upper end as the pump will allow.
Lifter leakdown is typically a slow process, usually over hours, not minutes. I imagine if your pushrods were "restricted" in some way the oil would find a way to leak down past those puppies in that amount of time!
Don't sweat the leakdown, or short-duration tapping on startup (sometimes hot as well as cold). It should not bother a thing.
When my daughter bought her first brand-new '00 Grand Am GT that exhibited the same noise to the point where I took it in to GM. They said it was the nature of the beast. I made them write that diagnosis down on the service record so if it ever did do damage after the warranty we would just shove that record in their face! Needless to say, 60K later we still hear a little rap once in a great while, but that little 3400 runs like a top. The same thing holds true for my son'* '99 Grand Am GT too!
Just keep that oil changed at 3K miles and maybe the filter at around 6K and she should serve you well way beyond the 200K mark. BTW my old very-well-cared-for Bonne just turned 200,000 miles this past weekend. I'm waiting for the water pump, alternator, or tranny to go next. Hope the tranny holds up for at least 10K more. I'm getting an 02 SLE this Fall. Gotta get that vette paid off first. That little Bonne is so sweet I just hate the thought of getting rid of her. I'd like to keep her in the family but I can't do with 4 cars.
The body is excellent, leather very good, engine clean as a pin (inside and out), new tires, new front end, including rack. Not a pin-speck of rust anywhere. Finish looks as good as my daughter'* '00 GT. If someone on this forum would like a very nice ride, and promises to keep her up as I have, I might consider giving you a sweet deal on her next year. CAN YOU BELIEVE I'M STILL RUNNING THE ORIGINAL FACTORY EXHAUST (MUFFLERS AND ALL). TO ME IT LOOKS LIKE THE COULD DO ANOTHER 5 YEARS!!

I'm drawing my conclusion that it would help lifter bleed down b/c of this ---> "The rocker arm ends are 210 degree radiused and there is a specially metered oil hole. This oil metering works to keep the lifter 'pumped up', and allows the engine to operate at higher speeds with less chance of a failure."
