Fuel Problem

Fuel Problem
Ok, here is the deal. While driving, my 96 SSEi started surging forward. I pull over and pop the hood and notice that one of my fuel lines is pulsing. Moving about .5 inches up and down every approx 2 secs. My first gut instinct tells me its the fuel pump. So, I walk around to the back of the car and I can hear the fuel pump running and matching the beat of the fuel lines. So this to me says that my fuel pump is going bad.
Here is the kicker....I smell gas coming in through the vents when I run the a/c or heat.
Kicker Part 2....30 mins later the car starts and runs at 100%. No problems at all. So when I got the car home I checked out the manual'* troubleshooting section. And here is what it said.
Engine surges while holding accelerator steady EASY PART
1. Intake air leak. (I do not hear anything that sounds like a vacuum leak)
2. Fuel pump faulty (Hmm, could it also be the wiring? I dunno)
3. Loose fuel injector harness connections (That could explain the smell but i would be lucky if i could pry one loose)
4. Defective ECM (Dear God please no!!)
Since I bought this car I have loved it. THE BEST CAR I HAVE EVER HAD!!!!! So I am askin you guys to give me a hand.
Thanks Guys
P.*. If the general idea is the fuel pump, can you guys suggest a good aftermarket pump. I looked up the prices for both OE and aftermarket and if I am going to spend that kind of money I want a good one.
P.*.* If it is the ECM, the same suggestions apply.

If you smell fuel, then you have a leak. First thing I'd start wtih is locating that leak as this can be dangerous to drive with a fuel leak. A loose electrical connection at an injector will not cause a leak, only a surge.
Next up, I'm with your thoughts on the fuel pump having an issue.
