I have a 95 se with 207k and it runs just fine except for this engine squeel. Let me give you a brief history.

About 4 months ago I replaced the timing chain/gears, did the intake manifold replace, new plugs, wires, cleaned the fuel injectors, all new gaskets, ect. The car ran good up until about three weeks ago when it began squeeling.

When I start it up and it'* cold it doesn't squeel. After the car warms up if it squeels when I'm pulling out or just sitting in my driveway and hitting the gas. It only squeels when I gas it from idle. Once it hits a certain rpm it stops squeeling.

I thought it was the belt so here'* what I replaced. A new Serp Belt, water pump, power steering pump and pully, new belt tensioner. It still squeeled. Than I took the belt off and started it to see if it was the engine and it still squeeked. Than I decided to replace the Harmonic balancer with one from a junk yard and it still squeeks. I'm now at a total loss on what to do next. Could it be that I got a bad balancer the only other thing I can think of is that I didn't replace the timing chain tensioner when I replaced the chain and sprockets.

The sound is a very high pitched squeeling noise, it doesn't sound like a grinding bearing or anything like that. It only squeels when the engine is warmed up and only squeels when it is reved up from idle. IT also sounds like it'* an external noise but I can't pinpoint where it'* coming from except to say it sounds like it'* on the belt side of the engine.

I hate to trade the car in since it still runs great and doesn't burn any oil but I can't stand the embarassment any more.

Oooohhh....that'* a good one. A couple questions, can you shoot video of it, and where do you live?

$50 says it'* a vacuum leak! I had the same problem on my 95, exactly the same symptoms. Turned out that I had thrown away the o-ring around the PCV valve. If you had the intake off, there'* lots of room for vacuum leaks.

It can't be the alternator because I took the Serp belt off and it still squeeled.

I'll check for a vaccume leak but I'm not convinced that that may be the problem. The noise is really loud but I'll get under the hood and check things out.

Anyone else have any ideas????

sounds like a two person job. Definetly have your head under the hood and look around for it. Is it a constant whine? Does it rise with RPMS etc?

Do you have to be rolling down the road, or will it make the noise while in Park?

Mine would do this occasionally before I replaced the catalytic convertor. Excess backpressure was finding a way to leak out through the exhaust manifold donut connector to the tailpipe.

Neat tip: Take the handle of a broom stick or similar wooden rod. Put one end to the part in question and the other to your ear. The vibrations from that part will travel through the stick. This came in very useful when trying to track the mystery squeaking in my car. Good Luck

Right, it'* a "sounding stick." You can hear all _kinds_ of amazing noises coming out of components that you think are actually running quietly.

But I'm still waiting for answers to my questions above: whether the car has to be rolling in order to hear the noise, etc...

THE CAR DOESN'T SQUEEL UNTIL IT WARMS UP. IT SQUEELS VERY LOUD AND IT DOESN'T MATTER IF THE CAR IS MOVING OR IN PARK.

Kewl. In that case, just have an assistant sit behind the wheel to make the squealing noises while you run around outside and track it down.

I'm thinking it'* something to do with the exhaust...
