Heat blowing cold + flashing heat controls after 20 sec
I have read a couple of threads about this problem but cant seem to find a clear answer. I have a 94 SSE. I had my alternator and 2 days (car set) later battery replaced. When I drove the car after the alternator being replaced and again after the battery was replaced I noticed that my heat display flashes for about 20 sec after I get driving and the heat starts blowing cold.

cause he seemed to have a very similiar problem. I was going to check the ECC codes to see if they needed to be cleared or something but not sure how to do that on a 94sse. I guess I can look in the glove box to see if that thing(what is the name) moves and I guess if it dosent means that the little plastic gear is broken.
Could someone just point me in the right direction.

The ECC flashing is a sign that the system has detected a failure.
If you can control where the air is coming out of (center vents, defrost, floor) and the only issue you are having is hot vs. cold, and you can see the rod from the airmix actuator having trouble when being driven to the left or right, your problem is either:
1. Failed Airmix Actuator (probably a broken drive gear in the acuator).
or
2. A binding airmix door (haven''t heard of one yet, it is usually the actgator gear)
Hot and cold are controlled by the air mix actuator driving the airmix door to blend hot and cold air thorugh the system. The airmix actuator is completely electronically gear driven. No vacuum is involved.
There is a recalbration procedure to insure the actuator rod is positioned properly on the airmix door connector (the white piece that the rod pops into that you can see through the hole in the glovebox), and occasionally this has been used with sucess.

You have the classic symptoms of a cracked 'gator gear. For some reason it starts to manifest itself after a battery disconnection.
When you watch your actuator you'll probably see the programmer try to calibrate...it will attmept to drive the door full cold (to the left of the car), then full hot (right), then it will settle in someplace between based on the temperature setting. Set your temp to max heat and watch the action. Set it to max cool & watch. If you see any hesitation at all during movement, the actuator gear is slipping on the shaft.

lash thanks for the directions. Went out to the car and looked all through the glove box after taking it out and I could not see anything that resembled the actuator. I will check under the dash.
Thanks everyone for your help. Its really cold here in DC and no heat Sucks! I just replaced my stupid blower motor about 3 weeks ago.
