cruise control servo successful repair
I have a basic '94 Bonne that was a program car. About two years ago it started giving trouble with the cruise. It would fade and loose 5 or more mph. Sometimes it would just shut off. Sometimes it would turn off and turn back on while I was bring the car back up to speed. It finally got to the point where it just wasn't worth using. New ones were too expensive when I first looked two years ago. Well, with nothing to loose, I tore into it. I took resistance readings on the three coils. They showed good continuity. At first it looked like the connections inside were pitted and possibly bad. (After you take the outer cover off and remove three more screws, the white plastic piece slides off of the long connector pins. The connections are between the metal tabs on white plastic piece and the tops of the coils.) I cleaned these by wiping them with lint free linen cloth. They were slightly pitted with very small amounts of carbon. Though now clean, this didn't help. Next I made the afore mentioned connections tighter by filling about 10 thousandths off the plastic standoffs/holes for the three screws that hold the white plastic piece to the top of the coils. This didn't help either.
I went for broke. I tore it down as though I was rebuilding a carb. I carefully disassembled the servo till it would not come apart any further. It was DIRTY! That'* all my problem was! It was just dirty AND needed another foam filter. The foam filter crumbled when I touched it. I cleaned and reassembled with a good quality silicone. (I’m a firm believer in good quality silicone on door seals so I also shot some in the vacuum bellows.) I used a lawn mower foam air filter and a razor blade to make another O-Ring type filter to replace the crumbled one. Once reassembled it now works every bit as good as it ever worked. It’* been working for almost three months now.
However, I would not advise anyone doing this unless they are the type who would rebuild a carb. Carefully disassemble while maintaining orientation and groupings of parts. You’ll see why during the process. Work in an area where you can find any small part that might fall. Clean and lubricate with good quality silicone. Maintain orientation and reassemble in the reverse order that things came apart. I’m not trying to scare you. I just want you to be careful and meticulous. It WILL pay off.
This is my first posting and the whole reason I joined. I hope it helps.

I took the cruise control unit apart and cleaned it. I put it back on and it did not work at all.
So I removed it again and took it apart - I had one of the spools in upside down. I put it back together properly and it works fine now.
