Exhaust Help Needed Please.....
 

Hey Everyone I am a new member from Massachusetts, and have an issue I need some help with. I used the search function guys.....

I have a 93 SE, and I woke up this morning to have my exhaust VERY loud, as if the manifold and the piping are no longer attached together.

I would like to see if anyone has a undercar picture or a photoshop/paint picture of the Exhaust for the 93 SE?

I am gonna take it to the local POS exhaust shop, and see what exactly the issue is, and if I need a whole new sys, or the price rolls around 300 bucks or higher. I am just going to go custom.

Any pics of what you have done on your SE?

I HAVE NO MODS.....So Performance is not a motivator, but if I am going to spend alot of money, may as well get a deeper sound if I can.

I'm a little unclear as to what kind of pics you're looking for. From your description it sounds like you're having a problem there the manifold meets the down pipe at the rear of the engine. This would be somwhat normal for an aging car as there is a "doughnut" type gasket that might need to be replaced. I needed to replace the doughnut gasket on both of my cars when I bought them. My 90 had about 145K and my 93 had 146K.

If it is found to be more serious upon further inspection, I have a down pipe and cat from a 93 SE laying around here somewhere. It came from a parts car I dismantled last year and was on the car for only 900 miles. It still looks relatively new.

The pics I am looking for would be just a shot of the exhaust route. As for now, I have no idea where exactly the problem is. I am at work now, and cannot really investigate now. My 93 Has 191K on it. Engine still going very strong. Knock on Wood!

You probably just rusted out a bolt or two. You see my sig pic? In the bottom centre of the firewall, there is a big tube just hanging there? Look in that vacinity on your engine, and see if that tube isn't fully touching the rear header output [it's all right there, you'll see it].

More likely, the donut seal in the downpipe entrance flange is deteriorated.

I went and check it out while on a break at work, and It's the piece of piping in between the downpipe and the cat. The front of the pipe where it would meet the down tube is completely seperated from the downtube.

Was there supposed to be a flange there?

It looks to me like a clean break in a weld or something. no flange present.

It should be one piece all the way from the rear manifold to the Cat. Have a new pipe welded in, but check the rest out carefully.

Our exhaust is mandrel bent Stainless, and rarely fails like that, but just make sure.

his pipe probably rusted out where the cat was "slip fit" in. the pipe is flared out before and after the cat and it likes to rust there. happened in our 1990 olds toronado but rusted 3/4 of the way around before i found it. with that many miles on your car you might wanna consider a new cat too. lots of us here are running the magnaflow/carsound cats and having very good luck with them. keep us updated.
