exaust manifold

i think i have a leak in my exaust manifold. I can see some black spots and hear it. Is it a big deal. Should i get a patch job done by a welder or just go for a new one?

Some BC members have had weld repair done on exhaust manifolds.

They are not an expensive item at a junkyard. Usually about $35. Check http://www.car-part.com

L67 manifolds are pretty famous for cracking their manifolds. But here is a little tidbit of information for you: L27 and L67 manifolds (series 1) are the same. And it is alot easier to find L27 manifolds in good shape than L67 ones. Only thing you need to look for is the front manifolds...some have male threads, some have female threads for the EGR tube, and I think that is year dependent.

L27 manifolds from 91-92 will not work on an L67. 91-95 L67 or 93-94 L27. And when you get them from a wrecker, they're cracked.

Your choice in dealing with them depends on how long you can afford to not have the car. I know you live close to work, so that helps. Just go on the assumption that all manifolds are cracked with age, so you're either repairing yours or a replacement set. Jerry's Precision Muffler is the best place here to take them for repair. Jerry has done my whole exhaust, and sponsored WCBF04 for us.

This MUST be fixed before you consider dropping pulley sizes or doing any other performance mods. Welding the outside of the flange and porting the OEM weld on the inside is a good prep step for further mods while you have them off.

Keep in mind I'm talking about both the front and rear. Both will be cracked.

Here's a good topic for you (ignore the red header paint, it won't last):
